Dear people at DSL!First of all let me introduce myself,
Im jeffrey from the netherlands, 14 years old.
I just burned DSL and booted it up !
woooowww.. COOOL MAN!!! AWESOME!!
only some things!,
iam a photoshopper, and i would like to know if i will be able to use photoshop or any other windows applications on DSL,
Because this is the only guestion holding me back from installing this as my standard/single OS, instead of now having win XP installed and using DSL via a Disc,
Also, would i be able to run my games too ? like Counter-strike for example,
or something like Halo, if you will..
please explain to me in understandable language for a beginner
,like: you have to open up ### witch is located at ###,
not like: Yo man open that program and typz0rs he0xoloalos

If you want to use those programs, I suggest you keep XP on there and run DSL as a LiveCD. You can run Photoshop in DSL. But it's a Windows program so it isn't really designed to be run in Linux. You go to MyDSL on the desktop. Go to System and then get the Wine extension.
Once that's added, use the device mounting tool on the desktop to mount the computer's harddrive. Then you can open a command prompt, navigate to the folder that Photoshop is installed into and type:
wine Photoshp.exe
I run Photoshop 5.0 this way all the time. In Windows I added the Photoshop 6.0 upgrade, but I can't run Photoshop 6.0 using Wine in DSL. It fails to start. I never tried to solve why, because Photoshop 5 worked and that's enough for the necessary usage.
The games probably aren't going to work this way. I never tried them but my guess is the fact that they access 3D acceleration hardware is going to make them harder to run, if they even can be.
Personally, I don't think you need to replace Windows XP with DSL. It sounds liek you'll still be needing to go to XP to do things so you might as well leave it there. You can still access the harddrive and save stuff to it and open stuff from it in DSL even if it's running off the CD. And if you have 256 MB ram or more, you can just boot DSL with the "toram" option and the performance is going to be amazing.

Tnx for the reply, but uhm, if i do things from the live CD,when i reboot its all gone!
...and i cannot save files good way, i mean how i use my own hard drive ? without mounting it i mean.

see backup/restore on the local startup documentation that first pops up under dillo.you'll need to mount something if you want to use your hdd.

Edit: Damn! i cant seem to get it to work, what i want do to is create a new folder on my own mounted HD and make a new map where i store all the linux files,
when i try to download a file to the for example: hdb1/linux map, it gives an error when finished download it says: " Please mount media containing optional dir and try again " but i'fe mounted my hdb1 already!
i really want to get this to work so i can finally poke around DLS a little bit without rebooting and losing everything every time,

I'm just learning about Linux myself, but if I really wanted to use a Windows program like Photoshop I would try to run it inside Wine. Have you tried this? Wine is available as a MyDSL extension.EDIT: I see you've already tried this. Oh well, just keep trying. If you mount your hard-drive it should be possible to save your Photoshop work.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. I know how you're feeling: I'm at my wits' end trying to understand what I need to do to install Muse. Maybe you could try creating a Linux partition on your hard drive, mounting it and then saving your files to that. That ought to work.

With backup/restore - the file is saved to say hd1 as backup.tar.gz - with all your settings for desktop or whatever you add to the backup.tar.gz. (I don't know if the backup.tar.gz can be saved to hdb1/linux map - think it just looks for a main partition like hdb1, but I could be wrong).
If you are wanting to save files - like PDFs, images, music, etc., you could use a USB key, otherwise I would suggest making a Linux partition on your harddrive - I don't know how to do that though. Perhaps the link above can guide you to an answer if neither of these is what you had in mind.

I think MDG's link has the answer.I usually just keep a MyDSL folder on the first HD on my comps and I save stuff there. I keep extensions there that automatically install, and I save my files to that. It's not as elegant as what's referred to on the link above but it works for me

The problem i now i have is i cant tell if it helped :P,here check this out:
1) The first step is to create your home directory. Load up DSL as you normally would. Don't use the home boot option. Execute the following. If you want your home directory somewhere other than hda5, replace hda5 with the mount point of your device.
mount /mnt/hda5
mkdir -p /mnt/hda5/home
cp -a /home/dsl /mnt/hda5/home
---------------------------------------
As soon as i try to make something via DSL, For example a directory
is says.. READ ONLY!!!!!!
, even tough i first off typed SUDO SU so i have more rights, and i also tried running the command "mkdir" like: SUDO MKDIR -P but also error read only!. i already tried doing the permissions thing but didnt work cause thats also read only lol

That would explain everything Either use another format, or install some things to write to ntfs (not really recommended afaik)

loooooooooooooooool :P, but i heard FAT32 only - point is that i cant have files of 2gb. ?, but does that mean a single file 2gb or also a map containining files that equal 2gb ? and will i lose my files when i convert me hd to fat32?

Pimpes I would recommend you install DSL on a USB key. This is rather easy, runs faster than from CD, you can save your changes (accessible from Windows too) and you can take it everywhere with you. This is one of the main purposes of DSL anyway and it will enable you to learn how to use Linux without breaking anything ! After some time you might also discover that The Gimp and ImageMagick are better than Photoshop...

i tried installing on usb key, but when i put BIOS on 1st boot: USB and then it just runs windows 
.I used A MP3 Player 512MB..
maybye it matters ? else i only have a 64mb regular usb key left

Well, I suppose you still want to listen to your mp3 don't you ? I see 2 possibilities for you :- use DSL toram from live-cd with the 64 mb key for backup/restore ;
- resize an ntfs partition (better not the windows C:) and create a linux ext2 partition + swap (this one about twice the size of your ram) in the free space. Converting from ntfs to fat is not recommended (you can only do that with Partition Magic, and that program is often referred to as Partition Tragic not without reasons) and not needed especially for the one that contains the windows system.
If you feel comfortable (I insist on this) and want to resize an ntfs partition I'd recommend this live-cd :

Well if i could put DSL on my 512mb mp3 player and make it work.. i'm willing to trade my songs for dsl :$..i think this is the best for me.. so i will not break anything etc. only somewhere around the forum someone said that the memory of an mp3 player will get worn out verry quickly with DSL ?

When using DSL on a USB key you just need to disable the cache of your internet browser. No saving of pages visited etc because you can write on a USB key a limited amount of times only and then it dies.Not every device can be made bootable but if you want to try with your MP3 player :

wow that are some hard facts but so when i disable cache of internet browser i do can write my usb key how much i want too ? im checking the link out now,and tnx sooo much for the giga mega super uber duper wow wow fast reply!!!
Edit: I followed a verry similiar guide, i did everything how it said, put 1st boot on USB etc, then reboot pc, and nothing happens, it just boots win xp. =( so i guess its just my MP3 player thats not supported ? maybye we could build a list of unsupported usb devices ?
