I have a IBM 486 with 8 mb ram.
How to use damn small linux on this machine?

486DX
16MB memory is the very minimum.+ swapfile
32MB memory recommended.

What's the requirements for text mode?
However,i have installed freedos in this machine,freedos permit me surf the web and read email in this old machine  :)

You can try, lets us know.
At boot prompt:

boot dsl 2 mem=8M

FreeDOS is very nice. I have lua on my freedos diskette.

What is "lua"?
Freedos work perfectly in all computer,from 8086,8088,286 and higher processor.

With only 8MB of RAM  you could try BasicLinux
