Install hangs up at "xauth: creating new authorityForum: User Feedback Topic: Install hangs up at "xauth: creating new authority started by: scrayen Posted by scrayen on Feb. 16 2007,18:26
I downloaded and tried to install DSL images dsl-3.2.iso and dsl-3.2-syslinux.iso. They both stop installing and hang up at: xauth:creating new authority file /home/dsl/xXauthority xauth:creating new authority file /home/dsl/xXauthority It says that twice like above. I had first wiped the hard drive using Autoclave 0.3 to get rid of WindowsXP. Then set up 2 partitions: hda1 is Linux type 83, 5 GB space for main program hda2 is Linux type 82, 1.1 GB space for swap Does it matter which one is first on the hard drive? I made them both xf3 types. Not sure if that is correct. Older Toshiba 2595 CDT Laptop 196MB RAM 6.1 GB HDD 399 MHz Processor(Really 400 MHz) Posted by tp560e on Feb. 16 2007,21:02
You might want to read my post about getting DSL to run on a Thinkpad 560e. I had a similar problem and found a way to fix it. Here's the page: < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....ad+560e > Posted by scrayen on Feb. 17 2007,03:49
It still does not work. I repartitioned and reformatted to make a 5GB fat16 and 1GB fat16 for swap. It still hangs in the same place. What is vfat and how do I do it. I am a newbie to Linux. Thanks Posted by tp560e on Feb. 17 2007,21:22
By vfat I mean fat16, which is the standard format for DOS/Windows file systems. But I don't think that has anything to do with your problem. My guess is that your laptop needs XF86_SVGA and an appropriate XF86Config file. Am I correct in assuming that you have already tried the various options given by the xsetup program? Do you end up with a funtioning text-based linux operating system? That is, do you end up with a dsl@box prompt? Posted by pdemaers on Feb. 27 2007,08:56
Hi,I am having exactly the same problem with installing DSL on an old Toshiba Tecra 8300. This is after booting with the nopcmcia option. Did you finally get a solution for this issue. Strange thing is that I had a perfectly working Fedora core 2 installation on there before. I wiped the whole disk with GParted and created two partitions, one 5.5Gb ext3 and one 500Mb linux swap file. Cheers, Patrick Posted by roberts on Feb. 27 2007,16:45
Sounds like a screen resolution problem when trying to start X.What is the native resolution for your video display device. Can you boot to runlevel 2 boot: dsl 2 or boot: dsl xsetup Try different resolutions Posted by WDef on Mar. 05 2007,22:01
A digression sorry, but for future ref:
My understanding is that vfat isn't fat16. It's closer to fat32 but it isn't that either. It's its own beast. Posted by bawbag31 on April 22 2007,18:41
My installation stops here, too. I am pretty sure it is a case of X failing to start. My laptop is a toshiba R100 with the trident cyberblade xp3 (i think) graphics chip, which doesn't play nice with xorg. I have had ubuntu 6.10 running on this machine - with X issues - but no joy with DSL. I have tried loads of boot and installation methods, with various boot options, but I still get the freeze. Any suggestions yet? I would have for this lovely laptop to be windows only. :-(
