I too am running DSL on a 166, It's an old Dell Optiplex. DSL is perfect for this unit. I have it installed on the hard drive and I really couldn't be happier. As soon as I get it up and running hardware wise I'll be running it on an NEC 133 laptop too. All I can say id GREAT JOB guys.

Hey guys,Is it DSL 7.2 you're using on these older machines, or something earlier? A p200 awaits an o/s, I have used 5.3 on it in the past, and was intending to reinstall. I just wanted to put dos on it,"up front" so to speak, and then a species of DSL. Regards, Adraker Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 01 2004,03:50
I'm currently running 0.7.3 from LiveCD on a Compaq Presario 1622with a 233MHz cpu and 32 megs ram. 800x600 display , serial mouse, wireless lan card, No reason to use an earlier version, as the extra features in the later versions allow you to run more stuff with less memory usage. ( the .ci files are amazing !! , I'm running firefox on a 32meg machine !! ) ...... with a large swap file, of course .... 73 ke4nt Posted by adraker on Aug. 01 2004,03:58
Thanks ke4nt1,good to know..... I only have 32 meg ram as well. With ram prices as they are, it's not worth trying to stuff more in. Adraker Posted by ke4nt1 on Aug. 01 2004,08:03
Even on ebay, where I find some of the HIGHEST prices on hardware, a 64 meg stick of sodimm ram is less than 10 bucks.. I think you would be well served to invest so little to up your ram onboard your box. DSL is a whole different animal with 96 megs of ram... So many more opportunities then when it is at only 32 megs. 73 ke4nt Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 06 2004,00:54
Thank you for making a LiveCD with a simple way to expand the selection of applications. Thanks for not using a graphical session manager that doesn't understand the concept "I want to close X now, please". Thanks for including applications such as vim, mc, mpg321, and links...sometimes GUI doesn't necessarily mean "better". Thank you for choosing Fluxbox. Thanks for a forum which is both friendly and casual. Thanks for sticking ke4nt1 with the huge task of handling extensions....he's been incredibly helpful and patient. Thank you for a liveCD that can be easily downloaded through dialup, and runs on just about any pc. Posted by adraker on Aug. 06 2004,10:03
ke4nt1-I obviously don't know the "right" people- old ram is a bit more expensive in my neighbourhood. Couldn't get 7.3 to boot on old P200,but 5.3 works fine.Someone mentioned Grey Cat linux somewhere, and I got the stupid idea I could make it work with an ancient SiS card.Still beating my head against the wall. Have now edited Xfreeconfig about 50 times and lost the will to live. Mikshaw- Amen to every single line you wrote.Especially the bit about ke4nt1! Every time I fire up DSL,I'm keenly aware that I'm plugged in to a Great Thing! |
