I have to say congratulations to the authors for what has to be the smallest functional OS ever built.I ran it on my P1 166 Mhz first but didn't work, I'm guessing that it's 16Mb RAM had something to say about that. On my "real" computer it ran beautifully from the CD having loaded nearly all the drivers, desktop and apps on less than 48Mb. Very remarkable. I haven't been able to do anything other than surf the 'net but that comes from a lack of skill on my part. Kudos. Posted by lucky13 on Mar. 18 2007,22:27
I think there are -- certainly have been -- smaller functional OSes. I got a lot out of 16kb and 64kb computers in the early 1980s. And then there are the modern microkernel OSes like Minix and BeOS (heh, I'll save my remarks for my own amusement). DSL does a good job at keeping Linux small. You can probably get it working on the P1 using the lowram boot label. It won't be as "fancy" that way but it should work. (If not, I can recommend even smaller floppy-based distros like muLinux that should work on it, but they're no longer actively developed.) < http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Cheat_Codes > Posted by atlacatl on Mar. 30 2007,00:11
Hey yea I did the same thing that Cybrid did, only that I did manage to get my old computer to work. However, theres two problems that I have encountered and i hope someone can help me with them. Its a P1 mmx 166Mhz with about 32Mb RAM. I think the sound card is a Creative. 1) As many of you may encounter when installing this kind of stuff, it doesn't recognize my sound card. 2) I get a screen picture and it works great only that the colors are not what they are supposed to be, (in other words it looks pretty crappy) I've managed to mount DSL onto the hard drive so i don't run it live. I'm a noob but I can learn quick, I just need someone to guide me in the right direction. Posted by abacus on April 04 2007,21:21
I have to agree - after a couple of days faffing around with 3.2 which would not HD install I pounced on the 3.3 iso as soon as it appeared and the installations went like a dream thereafter. Well done guys excellent work. |
