man.uci doesn't workForum: User Feedback Topic: man.uci doesn't work started by: hrwusesdsl Posted by hrwusesdsl on June 07 2007,18:39
-I open a root shell-I type /ramdisk/opt/man/bin/man mkisofs -and get a flood of error msgs ending with 'no man page found' -but the mkisofs .tar.gz IS in man 8 in /opt. P.S. I have 200+ MB of extensions. Everything works but wine & man.uci. I would like a local man without Internet... "Clobbering"? Posted by mikshaw on June 07 2007,21:10
UCI packages can't clobber, unless the person who created it made a huge mistake. It would be very useful if you could post the flood of error messages, as this would be the only way to figure out what went wrong. The man.uci package was also created when DSL 1.2 was current, so maybe there have been pertinent changes to the system since then. Posted by hrwusesdsl on June 07 2007,21:28
The first line of error msgs was/usr/bin/less: invalid option -- i I mention clobbering because i have many, many extensions of all types, so am wondering if something else "clobbered" "man". Posted by hrwusesdsl on June 16 2007,17:17

Quick solution: load gnu-utilsor just replace "less" Posted by mikshaw on June 16 2007,18:18
Sorry I forgot about this thread. The -i option might be configurable, but I'll have to download the package again to look into it. I do know that man.uci works in a plain DSL system (at least it did at the time it was built), so I'm guessing that something else you installed is causing troubles. In any case, the man package needs to be updated anyway, including fixing one or two other issues it has. Posted by mikshaw on June 16 2007,18:21
The version of gnu-utils I have doesn't include ls, although it's over 2 years old.coreutils.uci does include GNU ls, though. Posted by hrwusesdsl on June 16 2007,18:24
Thanks for quick fix. Am using Damn Small 3.3.

Are we getting ls and less mixed up here? Two very different commands.....

Your post is really concerning an extension and not DSL base. It really belongs in the extension area of the fourm and not here. However, your issue is related to the busybox applet version of less as was pointed out in this tread. This extension requires the full GNU version of less. Which is available in the gnu-utils.{dsl,unc} extension. Once gnu-utiils is loaded it works as expected. Posted by hrwusesdsl on June 16 2007,21:10
Well, it *was* user feedback. Thanks for clarification in re less.

Just been following this thread. If man.uci needs gnu-utils loaded this info should be given in the info file for the extension. At present it doesn't say gnu-utils is required - i.e. the info file needs updating.

OKThe ".info" file has been updated! Posted by mikshaw on June 18 2007,02:04
When the package was created, it did not require anything beyond what was available in DSL, which at the time was version 1.2It's possible that things have changed since. Note that was two years ago. Posted by jpeters on June 18 2007,02:41
Same pages are also available online:< http://man.he.net/ > Posted by WDef on June 18 2007,21:39
I''ve never noticed that it needed gnu-utils, and I use it a lot.But I'm using my doctored version of the man.sh script, run from fluxbox menu. @Mikshaw: would you object if I posted this as a modification to your original? I recall you said you wouldn't be uploading. It really is helpful to have it find man pages on the system and in /opt Posted by mikshaw on June 19 2007,05:07
That would be kind of you, actually. I keep debating whether or not to update some of the larger extensions, and usually put off even those that I want to do. Uploading a 5mb file is still a minor annoyance when you've got dialup =o)

Yeh it can be hard to keep up the updates and repairs, and you have a lot more extensions than me in there I think (probably more than anyone except the legendary Ke4NT?) ...My connection is rather flaky wireless at present, but I can upload largish files in offpeak times or on someone else's connection. |
