Very much by accident I discovered there is a gold-plated typo error generator in the February extensions. The name of the new xpdf3 uci:

xpdf-3.01pl2.uci

Now if you put that filename in an editor and change to all caps you get:

XPDF-3.01L2.UCI

It is also necessary to put a link in /opt/bin with a name like xpdf3, otherwise you just execute the old xpdf1 when typing xpdf [fn].
