DSL won't boot from an old Sony Viao PCMCIA docking-station CD-ROM, but Knoppix version 3.4 (2004-05-17) will.  If DSL is based on Knoppix technology, does this mean that the version of Knoppix technology it is based on is older than 2004, or has DSL taken out some of Knoppix's hardware support for reasons of space?

That's the exact version DSL is based on. No hw support was taken out for space, but something caused DSL not to boot on your comp. Could you give more info?
