Trying out DSL 4.2 on all the machines. I'll report on the wireless cards and adapters. Could you point me to where DSL from live CD stores the log files? dmesg is truncated, size limit I guess, and all I get is a lot of errors looking at the many card readers on new systems. There is a reader and usb hubs on the box, monitor, and printer they are all empty. I think they generate a lot of no disk errors. Looked in the ramdisk for the log file but they are old. I solved my wireless configuration problems moving from machine to machine with a linksys WGA54G. It saves the wireless configuration and I just plug it into the ethernet jack. Good work, I'll buy the book this month. Thanks in advance Posted by curaga on Jan. 08 2008,19:00
syslogd isn't running by default to save ram; it's one of the reasons to DSL's speed. So actually none log files get generated (they wouldn't be much use on a livecd anyway)..A card reader shouldn't trigger a no disk error; in fact I doubt such error even exists in Linux . Could you post the errors? Posted by chaostic on Jan. 08 2008,19:30
When you start dsl, add the syslog cheatcode. Also, run dmesg instead of looking at the dmesg file. Posted by geomort on Jan. 09 2008,02:42
OK thanks I'll try the syslog cheatcode to try and capture what's going on.Not sure I understand about running dmesg. It type dmesg in a console session and get about two screens of info from errors late in the boot sequence. I was lured into DSL 4.2 for the sata feature as a unity feature between 2.1b "I think" DSL-N and DSL 3.2. Anyway so far the wireless works better for me under 3.2. The WMP55AG "atheros chip" works oob. I can see ath0 in 4.2 with iwconfig but havn't got it to work. My other machines have linksys with broadcom chips that work with ndiswrapper and bcmwl5.inf in 3.2 but no joy with 4.2. The wireless game adapter is me work around. I'll post the errors if I can capture them. It's a long list but all but wireless still works. Thanks. Posted by lucky13 on Jan. 09 2008,03:28
Try: # dmesg > ~/dmesg.log That pipes it to a file in your home directory so you can edit, copy, paste, etc. I got bcm43* marginally working in DSL 4+ but I have warnings related to "driver features might not be available." Those warnings are accurate! Posted by geomort on Jan. 11 2008,04:29
I'll see what I get piping dmesg to a file. I only get two screens of mostly errors in the console.I'm having trouble starting syslog I think. Is the syntax to start the deamon with the cheat code: dsl {syslog}? Will the log be in /ramdisk/var/log/syslog? Thanks Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Jan. 11 2008,04:40
I think it is:dsl syslog and /var/log/messages Posted by mikshaw on Jan. 11 2008,04:42
The syslog file will be /var/log/messagesYou'll need to either be root or chmod 664 /var/log/messages (or 644) in order to read the file. I don't think you'll get many boot messages there, though, as it starts up after the init process has pretty much completed. Posted by geomort on Jan. 13 2008,22:51
mikshaw, you're right. There's not much in syslog. But redirecting dmesg output to a file did the trick. I can see the full boot sequence and it looks like the errors are coming from the card readers. I have included them if it is of interest. Best of all wireless is working with 4.2 and ndiswrapper. Don't no why it didn't work at first. Maybe I didn't mount the drive with the bcmwl5.inf files. I'll work on the machines with atheros chips next. They worked oob with 3.2.Here is my dmesg.log 10 <4>ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LMAC] enabled at IRQ 5 <4>ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNK4] enabled at IRQ 5 <4>ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNK3] enabled at Looks like the device sdb is causing all the errors. As you can see wlan0 is up and it works using WEP 128 at least. DSL 4.2 looks good with the sata support. I guess it's because of the knoppix habit of probing all devices when rebuilding fstab.Try booting with nofstab to see if it makes a difference? Posted by geomort on Jan. 14 2008,22:00
I booted with the dsl no fstabs and I still see some but fewer errors and the sdb entry /mnt/sdb went away. My guess is the card reader on the Brother MFC printer is the cause. Knoppix installer is trying to read or mount the fax memory or something inside the printer. It's interesting but all seems to work anyway. I have gotten the Brother MFC to work with CUPs and Brother's linux drivers with FC4 and Debian Etch but I suspect I would have problems with DSL 4.2. I see the errors with 3.2 but not 2.1 or DSL-N. Thanks for all you help. I bought the book too.George |
