On the systems that require the failsafe, experiment with these options at boottime .. noapic nomce noscsi nopcmcia The first two have been most successful for me.. 73 ke4nt Posted by Amp on Sep. 07 2004,03:04
Asus P3B-F / P3-700mhz / 512megsRuns pretty damn fast. Posted by davide on Sep. 07 2004,11:26
DSl runs on 486 too.I tried once w/ 16Mg of Ram, it booted up but no GUI (probelsm w/ xserver) So your P1 should boot. you just try with different options... btw if it doesn't boot with cd, maybe it's just that you have to change your boot options on BIOS? Posted by Delboy on Sep. 07 2004,13:13
Old Laptop Newbie user since V 0.4 - now using v 0.73 . 133mhz 40megs Ram, 12.5" TFT display at 800x600max. No battery, no CD Rom. Used framebuffer fb800x600 line at live boot - HD installed. Loads of .DSL extensions and other 'apt-get' things added (eg. XFmail, Abiword, Firestarter, Plan, various themes and wallpaper - all load and look great, have made desktop icons for all programs which didn't install them by default). This old thing stills runs fast enough to mean it is my regular home machine and my two year old windoze PC. is maintained purely for the rest of the family. Even Open Office .DSL installed fine (with icons) and opened up fine but veeerrrryy slooowww - deleted now.

Installed DSL 0.7.3 on an NEC versa 5080x with a pentium mmx processor. Works very well and have been able to use with my wireless network. Firefox works great though a bit slow which is to be expected for a 233Mhz machine. I did a HD install and llike it much better than Redhat which I had before.

Now we have gcc compiler in MyDsl repository perhaps I can compile and use a soft for detecting and using pcmcia netcard and try to connect it! By the way: My son enjoys doom.dsl :-) Posted by ke4nt1 on Sep. 15 2004,22:00

Homebuilt PC, AMD 2600XP+ CPU, 512MB RAM, 80GB HDDInstalled OK, but didnt detect my serial mouse OK (actually told me my mouse was a multimedia keyboard!). Havent had time to find out what was going on there! Very much liked what I saw of DSL, though. Will try it on an old 300MHz machine built around an old Aptiva motherboard soon. guy/gals,i have tested dsl on over 260 computer form version .6 and above. it is great!!!!! one of my favorite things to do is go to school and run it on a teachers computer, run it in there ram and when they get to there computer there all like WTF?!?!?!?!?!? it misses them up for a bit. but i really just love everthing a/b it. i use it at less two time aday, and i would really like to put in on and old laptop i have, but anyways that is a diff story and diff part of the forum altogether. later ryan p.s. cpu(s)" i have run it on form 66mhz up to 3.66ghz. ram: 5mb up to 2gb video i have had ALOT of problems with video. but i just use the term all the time any ways so? networkcards: i have had some problem with network cards but, have have a usb one the i use and i keep the driver on my thumb drive. its only 10mb butit gets the just done when ur just look at txt on line. modems: i have only had one work be for and i can`t remeber (soory) prints: never had one work?>? do really need one mouses: when i do go to the gui the mouse same to work all the time. keyboard: the is one keyboard i have that one not work with dsl, i can hit enter when the screen comes up but that is it other then that is great:) ide (cdrom fdd hdd never really had a problem sound (almost forgot) i had alot of problem with no sound blaster cards, and the nes emulator sound like crap in ever computer i think the emulator in config wrong Posted by kit on Sep. 21 2004,09:37
I tried dsl-0.8.1.1 on my Compaq Presario 700 Model 721AP on failsafe mode. Managed to run X-Windows but my built-in touchpad was not functioning. I tried the PS/2 mouse. not being recognised at all. The touchpad and mice are working fine in Windows XP. Please advise. Linux Newbie Posted by panama on Sep. 30 2004,04:05
ibm thinkpad 380XD233Mhz proc - 64 Meg RAM - 1 gig HDD - 12 inch monitor CD - floppy - battery - serial port - ps2 mouse - 1 USB port DSL 0.8.1.1 a shitload of apt-get stuff (no open office or firefox) can't get the damned ps2 mouse to scroll (but happy that's been the ONLY real prob!) smokin fast...as fast as XP on my $2,000 laptop! i use it to work around town with...great to travel with as a "work-horse-who-cares-if-it-gets-ed-up-laptop" DSL is the ONLY system that has installed and worked right away. I have tried Buffalo, Bonzai, Puppy, Feather, Morphix, Vector and Slax. All have been a major pain in the ass. I always come back to DSL and am back "on-line" within 10 minutes! I would almost like to see a "full sized" DSL that would really pack a punch on these old machines. Keep up the GREAT work guys panama Posted by Tectron1 on Mar. 03 2005,22:27
I have it on two omnibook 3000ctx laptops one is a 233 with 32 megs and the other is a 266 with 114megs. it autodetected my netgear ma401 card but wont detect my linksys card. I havent been able to set my sound up yet because I dont know where to start and havent had the time to find out. I am impressed with how fast it runs on an older laptop/pc, I have looked for a long time for a distro that would work out of the box on my old laptops/pcs and so far this is the first one that meets that requirement, with exeption of sound. P.S. If anyone could tell me how to set up my sound I would greatly appreciate it. I know all of the settings SB16 IRQ etc. I just dont know were i need to type them in.
