We had a great time today at the Belton Bi-Annual Hamfest. The rain came, but so did the cool and the breeze.. It was nice .. It was also nice to be indoors! Picked up some goodies, and gave away a few too ! I made about 50 copies of DSL with full /optional directories .. We handed out a dozen or so to interested folks, and left stacks at the entrances with signs that read "DSL Bootable Linux OS CD" FREE ! _ TAKE ONE ! Hard to resist when it says "free" ... We tried out several DSL CD's at the booths that were selling laptops .. My sons tell me I had quite a crowd behind me watching DSL in action !! .. We scarfed up some goodies as well.. Sherri ( My "Bride" for the last 16 yrs. ) picked up a nice laptop for $200.00 A P3-800MHz w/ 10G HD /DVD /ETH0 /modem /sound /14"LCD /128MB Very clean box... and best of all, It runs DamnSmall nicely ! Donald picked up some Maxtor 20GB HD's for $20.00 .. Timothy picked up a HP palm for a few bucks .. And all I got was this DamnSmall hat ! and I got a cheap 64MB stick of so-dimm for my Compaq 233 laptop .. from 32MB to 96MB !! Yowza ! About all the fun you could have for half a day at a $1.00 a head admission.. I saw a bunch of friends and contesters who I've known for many years .. I look forward to next spring's hamfest .. If only ONE person responds to our DSL CD effort, it was worth it .. 73 ke4nt Posted by clivesay on Oct. 02 2004,21:33

Hey, great looking family Kent! That sounds like a very good time (what a deal on the laptop), and I really like the hat! Curious, was the crowd very Linux friendly? Posted by SaidinUnleashed on Oct. 02 2004,22:01

Cool! You definetely make a great ambassador for DSL. Me, I keep reccomending DSL to folks and messing with it on my boxen. Still running the hdd installed (0.73) which is still a bit whacky.

Looks like you had a good time at the hamfest! Nice hat! and finally nice to fit a face to a callsign Posted by GrendelT on Oct. 04 2004,21:14
KE4NT -Good job at putting those CDs out at Belton. They were in a very conspicuous location. I saw them when I went up from to the front desk (raffle tickets) I saw a few of them go home with people. FREE and LINUX got the people interested I think. Great job, nice to see another Texas ham intrested in DSL. N5DUX www.neodux.com Posted by ke4nt1 on Oct. 05 2004,04:43

Well, I had used DSL before Belton. I saw the CDs there. Didn't notice which distro it was. Kinda cool that while I was at work, I check the forums and saw that it was you that left those CDs. Pretty cool. Posted by drewb0y on Oct. 11 2004,04:03

Hey drewb0y !Good to see yet another callsign from Texas.. There have been a flurry of Canadian call signs here lately [ I guess the BAND is open , hihi ] Are you running DSL ? Do you run any VHF gear ? I saw your callsign on QRZ As you can see, lots of hams here! Hope to see you here often .. Maybe we can get together at the hamvention in Arlington . 73 ke4nt |
