IBM 486DX/Si success!Forum: User Feedback Topic: IBM 486DX/Si success! started by: pyronicte Posted by pyronicte on Nov. 11 2004,08:53
I'm very pleased with the results. An older, ugly, slow 486DX/Si, with 16 MB RAM, 540 MB HDD, network card, sound and video integrated, is running smoothly with DSL. The main objective for this resurrection is converting this pc in terminal for W2k TS, LTSP or stand alone for users restricted. It works better in remote desktop than PII or PIII with W2K, because DSL isn't so resource hungry as windows is. The taks I'm performing know is giving printer capabilities over remote desktop and I have a fresh new terminal ready for new workers. Posted by AwPhuch on Nov. 11 2004,14:47
Welcome to the Revolution!!!You have a photo of system running? Brian AwPhuch Posted by pyronicte on Nov. 11 2004,15:05
No, I haven't got any photo now, but if you like I can take some. I could take one with the X, and other connected to the server. Where shall I send them?

One thing is for sure, DSL Rocks big time!I have an old IBM 300GL (Onboard video card, MMX 199 mHz, 130 mb ram, 2.1 gb hd, Linksys 10/100 pci lan card and isa sound card) that I was getting ready to toss in the trash. I decided to try DSL which is one of the best decisions I've made in a long time. Everything in my IBM worked on the first install, no looking for drivers for this and that. Try that with Microsoft and see what happens. I'm just amazed with DSL and Linux as a whole. Take care, John712 Posted by Matthew on Nov. 15 2004,04:02
Could you do me a favor and point me to the tutorial that tells how to do something like that? I have an old 75Mhz Pentium that I want to set up. It does not have the capability to boot from the CD rom (if i borrow one to put in there even). It will be a little work slave accessed thru SSH. I just need to get it running. I am not that proficient with linux, but I am good at reading instructions and making it work.Thanks. Matthew Posted by SaidinUnleashed on Nov. 15 2004,04:21
start with a poorman's using toms root boot.just use the earch function here in the forums. or if you borrow a cdrom for it, just use the boot floppy. -J.P. Posted by pyronicte on Nov. 15 2004,11:21
Matthew, First, you need the boot disk that it's present in download section. You boot from disk, putting at boot time the command "dsl 2". So, you'll enter in text mode. When boot proccess finish, introduce command "dsl-hdinstall" and follow the instructions in screen. That's all. Good luck and enjoy! Posted by Bidi on Nov. 15 2004,17:07
So which version of DSL did you install? Just wondering...

Ok, I tried it... and my computer threw up on me. So many errors. That and they were in hexidecimal. I dont read hexidecimal! I broke down and am installing windows on it. I am going to install the grub loader and hopefully dual boot. I know windows.. but I cant run what I need to and windows on 64 megs.*edit* I used fdisk to make the two HDD (Pri 700Mb, Sla 800Mb) into a single fat16 partition per drive (I had fedora core 2 installed on them by another machine). Then I booted with the floppy and it worked... kinda. I entered "dsl 2" at the first prompt... and it did its thing... and then I got the "knoppix#" prompt. I tried the "dsl-hdinstall" command and it told me it didnt exist. What did I do wrong? |
