How would you do this with DSL running on top of M$ XP? I tried the above & it didn't work. Thanks in advance y'all. Posted by SaidinUnleashed on Nov. 29 2004,01:22
dsl-embedded?I dont think its possible. sorry. -J.P. Posted by ico2 on Nov. 29 2004,14:54
you would need to connect to the xp host via network. grab samba.dsl and try it out.

DSL embedded works with a Microsoft Network file share connection. So you can share your Windows drive on the network as "CDRIVE" or something like that. Then you can either use the built-in smbclient tool inside DSL for an "FTP-LIKE" connection to your Windows fileshare, or you can use the above mentioned samba.dsl extension to make a connection. You need to have "Windows File Sharing" turned ON inside your MS Windows settgins, though. Posted by DSL_Nuuubilicious on Nov. 29 2004,21:30
I've just tried tried that & I can't seem to get it to work yet.Can it read NTFS shares? Posted by SaidinUnleashed on Nov. 29 2004,21:49

Here's my win sharesI have Win FW with shares enabled from my subnet. Thanks Posted by cbagger01 on Nov. 29 2004,23:19
Try this:On your Windows PC, open up a "Command Prompt" window and type in "ipconfig" and press enter. Write down your ip address. Now go into DSL and try connecting to the computer. Manually "Add" a machine but use the ip address for the computer location instead of the computer name. Good Luck. Posted by DSL_Nuuubilicious on Nov. 30 2004,00:03
cbagger01,I tried and LinNeighborhood kept saying 'Query error'. I tried with the ip as comp name & workgroup as workgroup. .... just ip as comp name .... ip as comp name & workgroup as workgroup & ip as ip .... all other combos Network info: My laptop is behind a router connected to the net. ip address: 192.168.1.101 subnet : 255.255.255.0 gateway : 192.168.1.1 Thanks to Everyone so far Posted by cbagger01 on Nov. 30 2004,03:22
OK,I don't know why samba / LinNeighborhood isn't working, but this process DOES work: 1) Get your ip address using the method defined above. 2) In WinXP go to Control Panel -> Performance & Maintenance -> System. Click on the "Computer Name" tab and write down your workgroup name. 3) Go into DSL. From the fluxbox menu, choose Apps -> Net -> smbclient 2) Enter your workgroup, username, password and share name (Example share name: "SharedDocs" with no spaces) and enter the ip address for the "machine" name. 3) Use smbclient like an ftp program for file transfers. I am sure that LinNeighborhood can work too. I just haven't tried it yet. Posted by cbagger01 on Nov. 30 2004,04:13
OK,Here is how to make it work with "LinNeighborhood" from the samba.dsl extension: 1) Get the workgroup name, computer name, ip address, etc using the methods mentioned above. 2) Start LinNeighborhood. 3) Push the "Add" button. 4) Fill in the following. computer name = "machine", workgroup name = "group", ip address = "ip-address" and press the OK button. 5) The computer name will appear in the LinNeighborhood window. Right-click on the computer name. 6) Choose "scan as user" from the context menu. 7) Fill in the following. workgroup name = "domain", user name = "username", password = "password" and press the OK button. 8) Your shared folders and printers should appear. 10) To mount one of them, select it and press the "Mount" button and answer the prompts. 11) The new mount should appear in your home directory. In other words, /home/dsl/mnt/COMPUTERNAME/SHARENAME Good Luck. Posted by DSL_Nuuubilicious on Dec. 01 2004,00:57
Great ! Great ! GreatThank you, that works. I also added a password to my win acct. I guess smb requires a password. Thank you. |
