Problems with bootForum: User Feedback Topic: Problems with boot started by: jamesishere Posted by jamesishere on Nov. 21 2004,03:57
I tested the Windows BAT file in Windows XP Professional and DSL booted into the emulator with no problems. So I burned the ISO (latest version of DSL by the way) and restarted my comp and booted it to the CD. I hit enter, it begins to boot. All seems well, and it gets all the way to setting the resolution and mouse settings for the resolution correctly. Then it hits the problem and says this:
It then stops booting and gives me a command prompt with dsl@tty1[dsl]$ as the heading to each new command. How can I remedy this situation? Thank you in advance. BTW I'm using a P4 2.4ghz 133fsb, 1gig dram, Geforce 4 Ti4600, mobo chipset is 8KNXP (intel), with onboard sound and ethernet. Posted by SaidinUnleashed on Nov. 21 2004,04:06
at the Boot: prompt type "dsl xsetup"select your preferred resolution and color depth. or if that fails try "fb800x600" or "fb1024x768" depending on your preferred resolution. Posted by jamesishere on Nov. 21 2004,04:09
It worked! Thank you so much.

Yet another problem, and I don't want to clutter up the topic list with my n00bish questions, so I'm posting it here.I have onboard ethernet (same chipset as before, Intel 875p 8KNXP) and I can't get DSL to access the internet from it. It's hooked up exactly as it is on Windows XP, and Windows gets the internet. Maybe a driver problem? I did the PPPe config (or whetever it's called) in the control panel, and it said it found 1 ethernet device (or something like that) but it had an error and it didn't work. Help again, please! if you are using a shared connection over the network then it should be ready to go out-of -the-box, PPPoe is for DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) connection, i think.head over to our irc channel at irc.freenode.net #damnsmalllinux or start a new thread over in the Networking area. -J.P. Blargh! It wasn't fixed! Sorry about my last post saying it was fixed, I thought it was. When it worked I had booted in "failsafe" mode and it prompted me for exactly as you said and I just told it to boot in 1024x768x32 and it booted up. I tried it again under normal booting, and after it prompted me to do that it gave me the same error anyway! I think that the internet didn't work because failsafe mode doesnt attempt to detect much hardware.Basically, it boots in failsafe, doesn't boot in normal. It gave me a different error when I booted in "expert" mode:
Help again with booting up please... Posted by SaidinUnleashed on Nov. 21 2004,04:58
failsafe uses framebuffer mode, so try that.

It worked! For real! It booted and has internet! Thank you so much!Anyway, on to the next problem... I assume by booting into framebuffer mode there is a noticable reduction of the graphics. Is the problem with AGP or something? I want to boot it normally for best performance. Posted by jamesishere on Nov. 21 2004,05:08
I just wanted to say that I made this post on Linux... feels good...

Framebuffer mode is a little bit slower than VESA mode (xvesa Xwindows server) but it should work fine on a newer computer like an 875p chipset / P4 or Celeron. If you wish to find out the supported VESA modes of your video card, try this. Boot with: dsl 2 This gets you into DSL text mode or console mode (kinda like an old MSDOS prompt, but much more powerful). Also, you can launch DSL normally for you and then either choose Exit window manager from the menu or press the CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE keys. Then type this command: Xvesa -listmodes Note the capital "X" in Xvesa command name. And your supported graphics modes will be listed. Write them down and reboot with this command: dsl xsetup Then choose the Xvesa server and select the correct video resolution from the list. Good Luck. Posted by cbagger01 on Nov. 21 2004,06:34
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. If you are using the built-in sound system hardware on some Intel 875p motherboards (I have an 875pzd clone), you will need to download and install the alsadebs.dsl extension from the myDSL repository. Be sure to follow the instructions from the alsadebs.info file. Posted by jamesishere on Nov. 21 2004,07:36
Thank you, I'll try those soon.
