I have another way to install DSL on the hard drive here:< http://www.angelfire.com/ms/telegram/general_howto > --- Once you get that done, then upgrading is easy, just replace the /knoppix folder with the new one. Using a backup.tar.gz (tarball) is explained there, and the one made for 0.6.1 will work with 0.6.2. --- I tend to run DSL off the cd now, since I have several versions of it, beginning with 0.5.3.1, which I like, because it had wvdial and could run Opera 6.12. I have the tarballs for the various versions in different hard drive partitions. Right now, I am using a dsl remaster, called Luit Linux, and have my tarball for it in /dev/hdb1. I can reboot into DSL 0.6.2, and restore that from the tarball located at /dev/hdb2. One nice thing about DSL 0.6.2 is the ability to take the restoration command at the boot prompt: knoppix restore=/dev/hdb2 Then, choose xserver/mouse/screen size, etc. That's it, and when Damn Small Linux comes up, my own desktop is there, with my menu, and wallpaper. No other remaster or older DSL makes it that easy. --- I know there is a script for installing DSL to a hard drive partition, but I have not do it yet. Went through that when I downloaded a custom Slackware 8, bit by bit, and got it all working the hard way. Not really wanting to do that again with Damn Small, I like working with the tarball restoration way, and I can burn tarballs to cd, and set DSL up on other machines very quickly. Usually, only wvdialconf has to be re-run to pick up the modem on my configuration to work. --- hope this helps. --- |
