I'm a complete newbie, just to warn ya'll.I installed DSL a while ago on a really nasty old computer. I made a swap partition beforehand, but when I did the installation I didn't do whatever you're supposed to get the computer to use the partition. I guess I must've skipped something, but this was about a month ago, so I can't remember. Now, my sister (it's her computer) tells me programs are crashing all over the place. That would be because of the memory, right? So I need to get the swap partition to work. How do I do that? Do I have to reinstall? If so, how do I do this right next time? I hope you only made space(partion) for it in cfdisk and saved the partion table...so please do...login as root an do "mkswap /dev/hdswap" /dev/hdswap is the swapdrive...then reboot Posted by Doriath on Mar. 17 2004,00:09
And sometimes to activate swap you have to type "swapon -a"

Erm, regarding this post, would I have to do this too?I created a linux partition and linux swap on the one drive and just installed DSL using the guide and made lilo work. I didn't get any errors and haven't done upto now (not used it much) but does it auto do this or will I need to do this too? (the above) Posted by hasty on Mar. 17 2004,19:57

I made a swap partition myself, and then I had to manually mount it. But when I do so, my little control widgit thingy says that the swap is full. How is that ?

Are you sure that it is showing "full"? It may be showing "empty".A quick check by typing in "free" on the command line should provide some additional information. Posted by PhrozenFear on May 13 2004,23:27
Okay, that makes sense - I thought the 100% was how full it was, not how empty it was. Thanks, cbagger.>>PhrozenFear |
