Oneko is very small, and it is about the only thing in DSL that a sub-6 year old will find entertaining. I have two girls, and one more on the way -- it's staying.

A magic hole opened up in the high speednetwork at the office the other day, and I was able to suck down some iso files, which are normally blocked. So I got Feather 7.1, Sam and DSL 0.9.2 syslinux. I was wildly impressed with all, particularly the MENUS in Feather.Sam and Feather are great distros as they come. But you can't add to Sam unless you HD install. And it's not "easy" to have a self contained Feather cd where you can restore the dpkg structure. Or so it seems. Without going online.... Or copying usr to ram so you can write to it. Admittedly, I am not VERY familiar with these other distros. But these are very, very good nevertheless. Even though there is more "faffing around" installing equivalent packages with DSL, (and its no great trouble), you have a smaller, more flexible OS for low ram machines. And you can make a fully self contained cd without going online after it boots up. The 50 meg base limit is a good thing. Normally, I would not have downloaded the others at home on dialup. Thats my impressions anyways. Posted by melange8272 on Jan. 07 2005,14:52

Ok, got 0.9.2 running now. How does isolinux work? I copied the ldlinux and syslinux files from my last poormans USB install because just having the isolinux files didn't do anything. (Once I'd figured out that it was booting from the usb and then running the os from the 0.8.4 cd I still had in my drive)Also, do I have to push anything to get the boot: prompt? I get the DSL image, it sits and waits for 30 seconds, and then starts booting (I have now changed it to 30ms in the syslinux.cfg) I think I got that on the CD, but the USB never gives me the option. (Although it does work fine) Thanks |
