I pulled a copy of the dsl-0.9.2-syslinux.iso to install on my little p2 laptop, but lilo
would not boot up from the hard drive. I have installed several linux distros on
this little 10-year-old Acer and I thought dsl would install and boot, too.

The documentation says that the syslinux version is the one for older computers.
How much older? Should I use the other iso?

hi. thanks for posting the question here! yeah, you should try the other iso.

The iso designated 'syslinux' works well on some older machines and laptops that wont boot with the normal isolinux image.

In my case, the isolinux (standard) image wouldn't work on a 1997 laptop which boots from CD, so i downloaded and used the syslinux iso, whereas the isolinux has worked fine everywhere else.

If one does not work, try the other one and you should have better luck. If no go on either one of those, there are alternatives to booting from the CD such as installing a bootloader on the hard drive (grub or alternative) to load the boot images and boot DSL and it will read the CD image from the CD rom.

Good luck.

Just remember that the syslinux version can't do a hdinstall right now.

If you want to HD install, you will have to grab the isolinux version and the boot floppy, if needed.

This has been corrected as of 09-Jan-2005.
While the dsl-0.9.1-syslinux.iso version was well tested, and installs to hard drive.
In haste I skipped a step while preparing the THREE versions of DSL that I have to get ready for EACH release.

Anyway, sorry, of the inconvience, but if you want to do a hard drive install grab the latest (09-Jan-2005) one.

Hey-ho J.P.-
I didnt know about 9.2 syslinux
not doing H.D. install, and did an install
anyway.Now MBR gone .
Do you have anymore details on not using
9.2 syslinux for H.D. install?
I didn't see anything about that when
I downloaded it........

Me too.  Tried v 0.92 syslinux iso on my 1996 laptop which, with new boot.img floppy, booted up fine using 'poor mans' install off C:\ hda1 Dos partition.  Hard disk install and subsequent Lilo install seemed to go fine without errors but reboot failed with an 'L' and a long series of 999999999999999999999s after the first boot panel.  Lilo script appears to be the problem.  Have gone back to v.0.911 isolinux version again using old v0.80 boot.img and everything HD installs perfectly again.

Strange.
I don't remember doing
cat /dev/pirate > forum.txt.
And what do I do with all these 9s ?
Yes, I installed DSL 0.9.1 for the moment.
That post must have been so obvious that
I couldn't see it.
But that often happens with buildings, other
vehicles, elephants, and alien mother-ships.
Time for another download......
