i just recently purchased the damn small linux cd because i messed up my win 98 computer so i could still get to use it. its very easy to use linux on it since it doesnt interfere with the harddrive and i am loving it so far but my problems is that the main reason i wanted to use the computer was for internet purposes. i am using a router and before windows 98 stopped working, i was able to connect to the internet through it but with linux, the ethernet cable cannot be detected. how do i set it up inorder to connect to the net?

What kind of network card do you have?
Posted by jckygmk on Mar. 09 2005,06:16
i am really do not know much about computers. all i know is that i have a windows 98 and i use a broadband router to connect to the internet from another computer in the house. so i really dont kno what network card i have:(  how do i check that out? i dont have any manual bcuz the comp is old and i didnt get anything with it. plus since the startup files in windows 98 are ruined, i cant get to open the computer using windows. inorder to check its information

Hmm..

Can you open an xterminal window and type:

lspci | more

or just

lspci

and see if there is any information about a netowork card model number or manufacturer.  Also, if you own a computer that was completely built by the manufacturer (IE: Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway, E-Machines, etc) then what is the manufacturer and model of the PC itself?

Posted by jckygmk on Mar. 10 2005,01:06
yes i typed that in but gosh.. there was jus a load of numbers with zeros on them and since its on another computer, i really dont feel like copying them down then having to type them here unless i really have to. but uumm  my computer manufacturer is   ( compaq Deskpro Ep/SB series) and my router model is
(LINKSYS WRT54G)   i dont kno if this helps or do i need to post what i got after typing in lspci it was something like this

0000:00:00.0 0600:8086:7180 (rev 03)
0000:00:01.0 0604:8086:7181 (rev 03)
0000:00:0e.0 0780:11c1:048c (rev 02)

thats just the first 3lines  there was about 10 lines.    ???

o i fogot to mention that my router connection with the other computer is wired. so  my internet card is not wireless

OK- here's the lowdown.

It's a matter of having a network interface card that is supported by Linux (most major chipsets are supported) . 99.9% of all home users use DHCP (Dynamic host configuration protocol) to set the IP addresses of PCs connected to the router, so if your NIC is supported, it will make a perfect connection to the netwithout any intervention from you.  My guess is you have a non supported Network card in your PC.

Try running the netcard configuration script from within the menus in DSL.

OK, need the other 7 lines of lspci.

You can also try:

ifconfig

and if you see an "eth0" device listed, then try

netcardconfig

Otherwise, give me the other 7 lines from lspci

Posted by jckygmk on Mar. 11 2005,03:41
i tried ifconfig but no "eth0" device was listed and
netcardconfig  said  that no supported network cards were found.
the following is the exact reply from lspci

0000:00:00.0 0600: 8086:7180 (rev 03)
0000:00:01.0 0604: 8086:7181 (rev 03)

anyone know what i should do next? because i am pretty sure my computer has a network card that works with windows it just wont work with linux or rather i dont know how to configure it to work with linux. heip pliz:( :( :(

OK,

This is going to be harder.

It appears that you don't have a PCI network card.  You have a PCI modem, but no network card.

So it is likely that you have an ISA network card in your computer and it is difficult to autodetect them.

Try booting into Windows and do the following:

Right-Click on your "My Computer" Icon and choose "Properties".

Then, click on the "Device Manager" tab.

Finally, look for your network card inside the device manager tree.  It is usually listed under something like "Network Adapters".  Ignore any "Dial Up Adapters" and write down the Windows Name for your network card.  Then post the name here in this forum thread.

cbagger01, I think his computer can't boot into windows. However, I believe there is another solution: He can buy a new generic network card and install it into any PCI slot. Remove the old card then boot up DSL. That should work, I think. And doesn't cost much too.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong :)

o yea you are right i was already giving up because my problem was that i couldnt boot into windows that was why i decided to switch to linux. but thankyou i'll try to get a new card and instal it see how it goes.

If you are going to buy a new card, you might as well take a closer look at your old one.

Remove the cover from your computer and look at the card with the network plug at the end of it.

Specifically, look at the biggest chip on the board and write down the manufacturer and model number.  Or you can look for a name / model information that is etched into the circuit board somewhere.

Then report your information to us.

You can also boot into your BIOS and see if the network card information appears anywhere inside there.

You can also tell us the manufacturer and model number of your computer system itself.  If the network card came pre-installed from the factory, it is possible to learn the type of card this way.

Finally, you can try a few "shots in the dark" and see if you can load up your ethernet driver manually.

After booting DSL, open up an xterminal window and type:

sudo su
modprobe 3c509
modprobe 3c59x
modprobe 8139too
modprobe eepro
modprobe eexpress
modprobe ne
modprobe ne2
modprobe tulip

netcardconfig

exit
exit

Hopefully, you will find one of these cards and then netcardconfig will work.

Good Luck.

or it may be an onboard network device?
Posted by cbagger01 on Mar. 20 2005,15:49
Usually computers that are too old for PCI do not have integrated networking, but it is possible.

Digital Equipment Corp once made a 486-33 thin PC that contained integrated NIC and SCSI port for expansion.

Google is your friend...

This thread has some links to the HP website for Compaq Deskpro EP/SP drivers.

They mention drivers for both 3com 3c905 and Intel PRO/100 network chipsets.

thanks guys i think the easiest way for me would be just to go ahead and buy a new network card since all i have to do is plug it in . i am really not into computers that much and i dont think i would have the guts to open the computer up to look for the card model but i'll try everything else that will seem to work maybe i can get soemeone to open it up  and check it out for me. though i think thats gonna take some time.

It might just be easier to buy a cheap PCI network card and use it instead.

Oops, I did totally miss the model info from your previous post.  I skipped right past it and went straight at the lspci stuff. Thanks rja

Here is another attempt at a solution.

Open an xterminal and type:

sudo su
modprobe e100
modprobe 3c59x
modprobe tlan

netcardconfig
exit
exit

Good luck.
