I get all kinds of feedback from DSL user, and even though I do not reply to most of them I always read them. Sometimes I get one that is just too good to pass up.

Wow. That's the first time I've heard of lack of crashes and errors referred to as "dosnt work you fool". Re the "make something better" comment, I guess we'd better get crackin' on a "BlueScreenOfDeath.dsl" for those Windows users.

Dear John,
I recently installed DSL on my home computer.
I went out-of-town for a week, and when I came back home,

I was so excited to come across your DSL software since I live in the country and it's impossible to get a decent connection speed. It took me along time to download but I figured it was worth it since I would have a blazing fast connection with DSL after I got the software.

Well, in short, this is such a piece of crap! after booting the CD, my connection wasn't fast at all! As a matter of fact, I couldn't even get ON the net!!! DSL is supposed to be fast with phone lines, what gives?

Dear John,

I tried to put dsl onto my business card and it didn't work. I don't know what you were thinking, but when I put the card in the drive, it didn't do anything. Sure, I don't have fancy, fine paper cards, but you need to make dsl so that it can be burned onto any type of paper. When I ran it past my MIS guy, he looked at me funny and told me that was the dumbest thing he's ever heard. He said I was lucky the paper didn't catch fire. You're lucky you weren't there because you would have felt really foolish.

You need to be more careful in the future before making rash, unfounded claims like you can take a business card and turn it into a bootable cd.

Hey John,

Ur dam small linux don't work worth sh**! I wasted a HOLE DAY downloading it on dialup, then I burnt it to a cd, but it woodn't boot or nuthin'! I even dubble-chekd the cd in windoze explorrer and shure enuf it showz dsl-1.0rc1.iso, which is the *eggzact* file I downloaded, so I know I burrnt it right!

Yore STOOP-ID dsl iz just a sick joke 2 c how manny ppl u can get to blow a hole day just 2 make stoopid coasterz!

Hello John, thrilled about DSL. Installed Linux manually a couple years ago as a dual boot system with WIN98. Ran some WIN98 HD fix software and it ate my LiLo!! Did not have the heart to get it all back together. DSL was an awesome fast and easy install especially the Xwindow system. The window system was a real joy to see! I never got mine working. I found for me the easiest way to change back grounds were to "cp dsl_backgrnd.jpg dsl_backgrnd_jpg" then "cp mybackgrnd.jpg dsl_backgrnd.jpg". At first I could not find any interesting stuff. Have not used ls for a while so I looked more carefully at the commands, "ls -a" or "ls -al" did it. I found 3 dir/folders where the icons are stored.

When I rm'ed 1 gif/lnk pair in all 3 .xtdesktop's and reboot my entire icon's were gone?

Why is it many of the command line programs do NOT have a couple of words at the beginning of the help file describing basically what they are? Reading to try to figure out what it does is a real pain. Is there a file with this info?

I also found that with the fonts in DSL it is all but impossible to distinguish a '*' from a '#' symbol. I made the mistake of thinking the remark out symbol was a '*'.

Does sudo su and other easy ways of changing to root some how negate or hurt the security in Linux?

How do I view postscript files? I see no 'gv'. Did a "find -name *gv*" to no avail.

My external modem with Linux downloaded a 2.2 MB file 3.4 times as fast as a internal modem with XP Pro?

Why would people use MS's HTML>CHM compiler to put technical info in for Linux???

Great OS Easy Install to hdd Great Job! tried it first on live cd it kept me interested so I installed it onto an old Toshiba Tecra 500cdt P120 w/32megs ram 1.2ghdd then I installed my SMC2532W-B wlan card and after a little convincing it fired right up. Now trying to work a bug or two out on a Fujitsu Stylistic 1000 (cant get pen to work) keep ya posted.

Easiest way to change backgrounds is with the command "bsetbg -f /path/to/image". No copying necessary.

I think you're seeing things? 3 .xtdesktops? There is one in /home/dsl, probably another one (template) in /etc/skel. The only one that should have any influence is in /home/dsl. You sure you only removed one gif/lnk pair? didn't change anything else? If there is a missing gif listed in a lnk file, or if the lnk is not exact, no icons will display.

Reboot is practically never needed in Linux.

The "help file" is typically built into an application, and displays only a brief description of commandline arguments. For more info, consult the program's man page. If you are connected to the internet in DSL, do "man appname" in a terminal. Otherwise, go to google/linux and search for "man appname". Usually one of the top hits is a manpage, on die.net for example.

Do you have tiny tiny fonts? I've never had trouble distinguishing characters. fixed is a very clean, readable font used as default most of the time.

Using sudo su does not negate security, but it does give you the opportunity to destroy your system with a few typos. Running as a normal user unless absolutely necessary, and having strong passwords set up are still two very important steps toward a secure system.

For viewing postcript files, try gvu. If you're looking for an application, usually "which appname" or "type -p appname" will find it much more quickly than "find".

Your internal modem is probably not a modem. Winmodems are mostly software-controlled, which means more work for your system, and slower performance.

I don't know what the CHM issue is...I've never seen chm files in linux.

I tried this and it does not stick. When you reboot its back to the original one.

Thanks, was changing all 3. I have on my system /etc/skel/.xtdesktop, /home/dsl/.xtdesktop and /root/.xtdesktop?

Thanks. I thought it would not effect anything there if I changed "icon.gif" to "icon_gif" likewise with the lnk. Had two icons then! Must pick them up no matter what there named? I now move the icon/lnk pair to another location.

Menu options & back grounds are immediate but the icon changes you have to reboot to see on my system.

I used "nano /home/dsl/.fluxbox/menu". Between poor eyes, white text on black.

Thank you, tried "gv" but I think I like "gvu" better.

Eeeek, that much difference? I guess I should have gone to external modems or an internal modem with a controller on it a long time ago!!! There is not many internal modems that have the controller on them now...

I think Noclobber answered this with "apt-get install xchm". Is this safe? Says its locked and I have to have permission as root? Taking the words of wisdom here and running commands not as root.

Any command used to change the background is always going to be a temporary change. The background which appears every time you start up seems to be persistent only because the command is set in the default theme....so that command runs when you start fluxbox. You can fix this by changing the "rootcommand" line in the default style (Simple), which is set for the Simple style only. You could also add a "rootcommand" line to .fluxbox/init, which will set the background to the same thing regardless of the style you choose. If you are running LiveCD, Frugal, or Poorman you will need to backup whichever file you edit.

/etc/skel/.xtdesktop is a sort of backup. Anything in /etc/skel is there as a template to use when a new user is created...these files are copied into the new user's home directory.
/root/.xtdesktop is for root, in the event that you run X as root. /root is root's home directory.

I'll repeat...reboot is practically never needed in linux. The only times i can think of when you need to reboot is 1) if you modify the kernel or 2) if something serious happens where you loose control of keyboard and mouse. Icon changes require only a restart of xtdesk. "killall xtdesk" and restart xdesk or restart fluxbox. You could also do this from the menu:
Desktop > no icons
Desktop > icons only

Root privileges are generally required for installing software.

sudo apt-get install whatever
should do the trick.

You know, Linux (almost) never to be restarted
when you load up some new software. BUT! Sometimes there are scripts or deamons not started
or executed... So I do restart my system, not only to
insure whatever might have been copied into my init directories actually started, but to discover if any
startup conditions exist that I didn't know about before I installed the package.

Hi

There is a problem you should know about.

After using DSL on a Win 98Se machine, Windows has to reinstall serial devices.

This is not cool. It does not matter if it is a windows problem or not, as it makes Linux look bad.

Imagine you are Windows user, a friend comes over uses DSL from the CD, and after he is done, and you boot up windows, your machine does not work the way it did before. What would impression of Linux be?

I mean this as constructive advice. I really want Linux to prevail.

Well, this is the first distro i succeded to instal in an old laptop 486 with 16MBRAM-512MBHD. Being a linux newbie, it was sort of tricky, but i ended up with an hd install dual-boot Win95-DSL. My aim was to determine if there is a better alternative than win95 for such atticware. Due to RAM limitations, it's impraticable to run DSL from hd compressed image, at least with graphics. Things improved with a swap partition added, but at 640x480 windows are not scaled down, so navigation is awkward. I have yet to try Xremote but for now, to my very disapointment, Win95 seems to be unbeatable.
I never thought it will come the day to tip my hat to Win95, which i learned to hate thoroughly, but no other OS seems to do so much with so little hardware. :angry:

borgward, having been booting these things up for a year and a half I can say that, in my experience, DSL live never alters Win98SE settings. A few more details of what exactly is being changed would be useful. You are right in saying that this is a problem IF it is really is a DSL issue.

Not long ago, I managed to install a no-math-coprocessor version of DSL 0.7.3 on a 486SX 33MHz desktop w/24MB RAM and 210MB HD on which I was originally running a rather sluggish Windows 95 OSR2. It ran, but was way too slow to be useable.

You might want to try some other small Linux GUI distros. I tried Grey Cat, but my non-VESA-compliant video caused X to not run.

I ended up installing (don't laugh) Windows NT 3.51 Workstation with NewShell 2. It was half the size, twice as fast, more secure (in NTFS), *much* more stable than Win95, and had the Win95 look & feel. With a little digging I was able to locate some decent Internet apps (web browser, email client, etc) for it as well.

you sure come with some ideas that never occurred to me, like NT in such machine. I'll give it a try if I can put my hands on the OS.
The thing is, i'm finnally starting to fiddle up with linux, and having sooo much fun. If only the boot didn't take so much time...

Hi

I posted an earlier comment that after attempting to use DSL on a windows machine, windows (98SE) would have to reinstall serial devices.

I was never able to connect to my isp from DSL. I tried Ubantu. Ubantu diagnosed my cd drive as defective. I replaced it w/brand new drive, and was then able able to connect to my isp using DSL.

Furthermore, I had no trouble w/windows having to reinstall serial devices.

to update directly to the CD? (?)
2. MyDSL - I bet other would like to MyDSL MAN PAGES.
I keep going to my books or my old SuSE6.4

REX library (I think) - It's kind of big, but it mimics the
Mansfield Editor. Any chance any body else is interested
in it.
4. (Dang, I'm not at home right now.) The is a player
from South America for ".MOD" files. It's pretty good.
5. I've let kids attack DSL and the only problem I've
encountered is (MS) sites and the inability to gain
access because the FireFox plugin's are either for
the wrong OS, or not started. Will provide the kids
sites if anyone interested....

Puppy Linux (an offshoot of dsl) can do this. They have a separate page on their forum for discussing it - so it seems to have problems - maybe John/Roberts are working on other stuff first - or don't see it as necessary for a 50mb distro.

Gee, thanks for the responses! The firefox meanie was
WWW.MYSCENE.COM... All the kid wanted to do was
printout some paper dolls and she couldn't get it
because it wanted some plugin. Which we downloaded
and the response was no change.

Yes, it's true... my poor computer is out in the boonies,
and by the end of summer there might be wireless internet
available for me it the signal is strong enough. (A new tower is going in.)
I unplug my hard drive and actually plug it into another with hi speed service.

Couldn't even get into the sight... The system keeps demanding the MAcromedia flash be downloaded, and after
it has been, it's like nothg was done at all. Still wants it downloaded...

I just tried it in DSL and it worked without issues. Use the script in the DSL menu to install the flash plugin for FF. Once you do that, the site works perfectly.
