I boot DSL from a CD. I specified a backup location of hda4.  It seems to have worked.  My ISP information, and some Firefox bookmarks are recovered during new boots.

However, I can't find the backup file!  I have checked all my win32 partitions.

It's moslty a matter of curiosity, but some time in the future, I may wish to remove these files.

Why can't I find the DSL backup file, or how can I delete the file.

The backup device is specified in the file /opt/.backup_device
So use the cat command to peek at this file. then mount that specified device unless already mounted, your backup.tar.gz should be located there.
