I have tried loads of other distros which all hang on kernel panics of all sorts, but somehow, dsl boots and runs fine on my machine.  I was just wondering exactly enables this distro to run on such low ram without a swap.

smaller applications, fewer apps loaded into ram, smaller kernel....probably other factors i don't know about

Would these kernel panics i've been having with all other distros be due to low ram?

Thats possible.
Or the other distros might have a bunch of junk in the kernel/initrd somewhere...

DSL uses a minimal kernel, and loads everything else as a module. The other distros might have a cludgy kernel, and it has stuff that shouldn't be in there...

Hope DSL works out well for you =) enjoy.

Yea, all those other distros would kernel panic on some initrd issue complaining about a compressed image at block 0.  Well thanks for the input.  poop on a stick.
