Excellent Review...Hats off, he gave every release a fair shake...DSL even got beaten..but still its gotta be the best! Brian AwPhuch Posted by cbagger01 on April 06 2005,16:48
I thought it was a good review compared to others done recently. The only reason why DSL scored lower overall is the author's preference for bubble icons on the desktop for appearance sake as far as I can tell. Of course he has never tried to use those icons on an 8bit desktop or DSL would beat Feather hands down for appearance :-) But what bugs me about all of the reviews (not just this one) is that the authors just don't GET IT when it comes to the whole myDSL system and how it works. At least there was a screen capture of the myDSL gui, so this is better than some. If I were a person reading the reviews, I would want to know this information: 1. DSL is tiny but if I want more programs on my livecd, I CAN BUILD MY OWN CUSTOM ISO and burn it to CD. So I can add almost any of the programs that were featured in the other livecds if I choose to do this. 2. DSL has a modular extendability so I can grab one of these programs from the myDSL gui and try them out before going through the process of rebuilding a n entirely new ISO. Other than the "klik" thing and KNOPPIX (which wasn't reviewed as a "Small Linux" category), these concepts are uniquely implemented and just as important USABLE when you choose DSL livecd. And i think a good way to promote people LEARNING what they don't know already right now would be to update our website a bit, design wise, content wise. That would solve a lot of the issues we have with usability (and new-user) issues. Aside from that our archaic kernel could have had something to do with it ;) With Feather just slipping the 2.4.27 in there on us. bahaha...oh well! Posted by AwPhuch on April 07 2005,00:34
This is true...making it a tiny bit more eye cathing would be coolBut its awesome as it is I guess Brian AwPhuch Posted by joer on April 07 2005,01:10
IMHO, these reviews should compare apples to apples. Therefore, the mico distributions should be 1. Damnsmall 2. Puppy, 3. Austrumi 4. Luit Also, they should have a category for being original. Feather and Luit copied DSL. How many members of these forums have done that. It is easy to copy the work of others. Just adding more apps or changing the kernel is not very original. If all of the members posted their remasters of DSL there would be enough feathers to cover a goose! Also, if you read the author's other posts he recently is trying to run fluxbox for a month to compare with KDE and Gnome. And guess what, he chose those bubble icons for his desktop. What can you say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As for me, I prefer to see original ideas and there I would rate Puppy ahead of Feather or any of the other DSL clones. Original ideas IMO come from 1. DSL, 2. Puppy, 3. Austrumi That is what makes these mico distributions exciting. And tronic, LEARNING comes via good documentation, hey, wait a minute, isn't that your area? I see the docs have not been updated since February. Maybe, if you would comb through the posts of cbagger, ke4nt, roberts, and some of the other great answers and update the docs, then the new users would be able to learn of all the great original ideas in DSL. As for me, I am anxiously awaiting the next release to see what DSL comes up next. Posted by tronik on April 07 2005,03:30
hi joer...the alias is tronik...with a k...K? thanks for the trolling =) The documentation is pretty current up until about 0.9.3 (which is the last official proper release of DSL...1.0 is still in Release candidate...So when 1.0 comes out, a flurry of new documentation for 1.0 will come with it!!! Sound good yet? Well-- You're right about one thing though, DSL is better. So, I'm not really sure why you're trolling on me, all I said was we need to update OUR website. Documentation included. Thanks for the general concern though, since the documentation is in a form where anyone can post it. Maybe you should try posting some documentation! And I'll add it to the docs for everyone. =) Haha..i really liked this part:
Enjoy DSL =) Thanks for using it. Posted by SaidinUnleashed on April 07 2005,03:42
It's also MY area. And you are dead wrong. I added a new doc 2 days ago. And more work has gone into the docs in the last 2 months than everything else put together. You people just can't see the effects yet. But DO NOT get on my case about documentation. Ever. I write new docs as I come across things that I think need to be addressed, and when I have time. If you think that we need something documented that Will or myself have not covered, there are instructions on how to get it to me. Otherwise, get off our case. No one here does this as a job. We do this because we enjoy it. And yes, you can read that as "J.P. enjoys writing documentation", because I do, but there are many, many things that I have to do before I get down to being able to do the things I enjoy. Don't like it? Tough. I have to take care of myself and my future first. Also, although our documentation is nowhere NEAR the level of documentation in other distros, they have had years and many people to design and set their's up, and it's great that they have that. Will and I are only 2 people, with limited time, and even more limited time to devote to writing cohesive docs. And before January, DSL had NO documentation. Things now are leaps and bounds better than in the past. And to have someone come in and bitch and moan about what has been done, what has been accomplished? Rubs me the WRONG way. Basicly boils down to this. Submit docs, ideas, or suggestions to me, via the instructions in the docs. Complaints? Go cry to your momma. We don't want them. Out. -J.P. |
