the german umlaute ÄäÖöÜüß are broken. the first dsl-version i can't use to save my data in the university-computer room...btw: is there an official changelog for dsl 1.0 ? Posted by roberts on April 13 2005,21:37
There have been no additions or deletions of the key maps. For change log see the < notes > section. There remains three keyboard choices for German keyboard. Posted by clivesay on April 14 2005,00:33
Appears there may be a bug with the mydsl panel.I have tried to install two apps and both gave me a checksum error. However, when I went to the /tmp dir and loaded them manually, they loaded fine. Chris EDIT: Some do not seem to be having this issue. I may just be having a problem right now....sorry. Posted by roberts on April 14 2005,05:58
I only check the checksum on newly downloaded files and not local files.I do not require the md5 files to remaiin with the actual extension files, otherwise you would have to store the md5s with the extensions in the root dir and optional. I did not want to impact the system like that. So therefore only while downloading is the check done. This prevents bad downloads and also the case when the download is prematurely stopped by the user or an out of memory conditions arises. By ignoring the checksum then manually forcing the load of the local file may result in unpredictable results. Posted by struppi on April 14 2005,07:57
hm where is my mistake? i booted dsl with "lang=de". only äöüß don't work, the rest of the german keyboard-layout is ok. Posted by roberts on April 14 2005,16:19
Try booting dsl with the xsetup option to select keyboard, then try de-latin1Or use the the DSL panel and select keyboard to change keyboard, you must exit the window manager and re-enter to see the effects. The option that you are using lang=de actually is handled inside knoppix-autoconfig which has not be changed. But then again, you don't state which version you had prior, like say 0.7.x. That was the last time the knoppix-autoconfig was upgraded when we went to the newer kernel, modules and matching knoppix-autoconfig. Posted by kaplah on April 14 2005,19:08
I haven't been able to get any extensions to work - I get "Download checksum error" on every one... including themes. I manually checked the md5sum and it *IS* wrong..... The downloads seem to go along just fine, though...... Posted by roberts on April 14 2005,23:50
Mystery solved. I just got finished working with Ke4nt to solve this problem.First there is no problem on a pristine boot for DSL. What we discovered is that when gnu-utils.dsl is loaded the failure begins. This is why I never saw the problem. Sorry, I only use UCI type extensions. This also explains why some users experience the problem for EVERY extension, as they probably have gnu-utils is their root and autoloading. It also explains why some users can load some extensions and they no more will load without checksome errors. The md5sum in the base iso is significantly different that gnu md5sum. Therefore wrong checksums were being produced once gnu-utils comes into play. Now for several work-arounds: 1. If you experience this failure, then open an xterm and cd to the /tmp or where ever you downloaded the extension. Manually issue the checksum command like this: md5sum -c extension_name.dsl.md5.txt If it returns an OK then manually load it with mydsl-load extension_name.dsl 2. If you have a hard drive install or have a writeable /usr/bin then you can patch the code. Edit /usr/bin/mydsl-wget and delete the -s option of the md5sum line of the script. 3. Wait for 1.0.1. I will check with John if OK to issue 1.0.1 ASAP. I already have three fixes in 1.0.1 Special thanks to Ke4nt, and also to Joel, and Chris in communicating with me to solve this. I am getting bad checksumsAnd it's not consistent- sometimes I get a good download and sometimes I don't (with the same files). But every time, the checksum is bad.... and every time the download appears to complete successfully. My guess is "Wget" is broken... Posted by caulktel on April 15 2005,00:38
Robert, patch #2 works fine. I was able to install several apps with no problem. Thanks.

good news. I always have gnu-utils autoload at boot so that makes sense. Thanks for your help roberts. I am definitely a fan of getting 1.0.1. I want to try and setup NFS Chris Posted by kaplah on April 15 2005,10:34

Nice done! I don't want to stress you but is the "bug" fixed for wordview opening doc files including spaces? grtz Posted by roberts on April 17 2005,00:28
Sorry, I don't consider that a bug. But a currently unsupported filename nameing convention primarly used by MS. For now there is a feature called rename file.
Posted by gunnix on April 17 2005,13:28
Yea you are right. Better not to support filenames containing spaces and rename them. Though it will look like wordview doesn't work to someone who doesn't have the knowledge and the person will probably not find the solution to rename it. Maybe adding an error text to it pointing out that names containing spaces are "wrong" and that they have to rename it. (?) Posted by sega01 on April 19 2005,02:57
in the dillo popup, theres a mistake with the start menu area which says, to bring up the start menu left click on the desktop, when it should really be right click, and in connecting to the net it says "dail up" instead of "dial up". sorry but i cant help pounting out grammar and spelling errors on something as good as dsl

Thanks for reporting the errors in Getting Started. Too bad there is not a blushing smilely, or I would use it here. Gosh I wrote Getting Started so long ago, and no one ever noticed. I am terrible at proofreading what I write. Thanks!

Yes, pounting, the act of pointing and poutingsimultaneously..... I gotta get a "real" dictionary. *Just a little humour folks* Posted by clic on May 08 2005,21:38
