This is a great Distro. I don't know if you realize it but the rather simplistic Distro Chooser at www.tux.org suggests DSL for those with a computer older than 2 years, don't want to install onto hard drive, and would like a more technical version of Linux.

I run DSL on a work laptop so that I can use Bluefish to do my HTML editing and not distrub the hard drive.

When DSL boots up it only has one warning, but it doesn't seem to affect the functioning of DSL.

"can't locate mprob block major 2"

I'm not sure what this means. Any ideas, I think I quoted it correctly, but I may have made a few mistakes in joting it down quick.

When I try a shut down or a reboot it just freezes and then ejects the CD is that how it is supposed to work?

What might be going wrong?

I run a 2.8 PIV, 512 megs of ram, Toshiba Laptop. I save mydsl and backup on a USB memory drive.

Running DSL 0.8.0

Thanks for your help,

Does this work when you shut down:

remove the cd from the tray when it opens up.
Close the cd tray.
Press the ENTER key.
Wait a couple more seconds (5-10).

Hey, that worked perfectly. Actually, I didn't have to wait for a few seconds it was right after I pressed enter the laptop shutdown just like expected or rebooted.

Thanks

Any idea about the informational message I get. It happens during the auto-configure part of the boot process.

I have noticed trouble getting a printer to work, could that be involved?

My guess is that your computer's graphics chip does not switch back into "text" mode after the Xwindows interface is shut down.

Normally, you should see a text mode (looks kind of like an old MSDOS screen) message that is something to the effect of "Please remove disk from CDROM, close tray and hit ENTER to continue"

Just for kicks, try typing this in at the boot command prompt when you next boot up DSL:

dsl vga=normal

and see what happens.  I don't know what the other errors mean, but I think that they are unrelated to your printer problems. What is the manufacturer and model number of your printer? How is it connected to your computer?

I get the modprobe error on every machine ive used, inc AMd1900XP, PII 400, Libretto laptop and this mini-itx board. So I think its nothing to worry about too much.

You are probably right about the graphics chip. This toshiba uses the Intel Extreme integrated graphics chip. I'm just glad you let me in on the enter key, I'll just remember to do that.

Thanks Libretto, about the modprobe error. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with that problem. I also haven't experienced any troubles that I can tell so far because of it. I just love how fast everything works in DSL. I've given a friend the Knoppix CD, but I think that I will give him a copy of DSL instead because he has a 400 Pentium II, and DSL should run faster.

Back to the printer problem. It is a Canon S750 Color Inkjet. When I configured with the built in script it didn't seem to set up. I turned it on in the DSL System panel just like the start up directions said. Also the setup script didn't have a driver for the S750, just the S800 and S450. I don't even know if those will work with the S750. It is connected by USB.

Any ideas?

This is a buest guess, but I would try the following drivers (if available):

S450
BJC-6000
BJC-6200
S800

Set print quality to 600DPI for your test.

There have been reports that the S750 will work with the S800 driver except that it won't print out black correctly.

This is no shock to me because S750 is supposed to be 4-color and S800 is a 6-color printer.

This is why I suggest playing around with the previously mentioned drivers.

Good Luck.
