Problems with DSL 1.0.1Forum: User Feedback Topic: Problems with DSL 1.0.1 started by: Melancholie Posted by Melancholie on April 21 2005,16:01
First I wanna say that DSL is a great thing! I love the idea of having a very small OS that is enough for all you wanna do! And I wanna say, that the following description of some problems I have found does not lower my enthusiasm! DSL is a great project which is worth to be supported:That's why I want to point to some problems when doing "advanced" things with DSL version 1.0.1. First I used the boot mode F3. There is a little typo: it should be 1024x768 and not 10214x768 or something (a number like this). The hd-installation worked fine (even my Win98 system is still available; unfortunately other Linux distro installations cannot do so)! But when I wanted to shutdown my computer after using the HD-installed DSL there is shown "KNOPPIX halted" in green letters after "sending Kill signal......" and so on. This should be "DSL halted". (is it possible to show "Now you can turn off your PC"? My PC didn't turn off automatically, and when pressing the power button to early the PC freezes and I cannot press the power button (it didn't work)! I only could reboot my PC with the reboot button. Only when waiting until the PC/HD is getting a bit more silent (sleep mode?) the power button works! A message would be great to know when someone is allowed to push the power button) Software: I wanted to have the newest and safest version of Firefox. Therefore I had to install 1.0PR (i do not know why, but installing 1.0.3 instantly didn't work) by using MyDSL (a really great and easy way of getting software!). Now I was able to install Firefox 1.0.3 with the installer of firefox-browser.de. It worked fine, even üöäÜÖÄ, but I could not type in [{\²³~ when using Firefox 1.0.3. So I tried to type in my text in Beaver. But when using Beaver I recognized that I cannot type in üöäÜÖÄ (as a German user of DSL with the de-Latin1-nodeadkeys key map)! But [{\²³~ was working on Beaver!? Strange, isn't it? So I considered installing Abiword with the help of MyDSL. First there was a checksum error. On the second run it worked out. But I had to notice that Mozilla Firefox was not working any more (no version, not 0.9, not 1.0PR and not 1.0.3) . When trying to start Firefox out of emelFM (as superuser) a message containing "...pango error..." was shown! --- I hope you can help me with this problems, and I hope I can help you to improve this auspicious distro! --- Melancholie Posted by mats on April 24 2005,14:19
@/alt gr still not working with norwegian keymap in opera or firefoxI will be very happy when this issue is fixed i also wanna say that DSL is the best minidistro! tried puppy 1.0.1 yesternight, and it has gotten far better, but DSL still rules Posted by softgun on April 24 2005,15:45
DSL is derived from Knoppix. Therefore there is a directory called KNOPPIX and on starting Knoppix is mentioned and so when halting. We acknowledge the other distro. That is all. As for shutting down, 1.0.1 shuts down from the HDD install and switches off the machine nicely. I think this is the best looking DSL too!! You will learn more about DSL if you try it out a lot as a LiveCD. Try all the software in it (not just the ones with icons on desktop). Download the other stuff you want and try them out. Remember some are experiment and you need to show the problems and solve them and let everyone know. If you cannot - ask.But first read the HowTos in the forum, carefully. Welcome and good luck! Ok, but there is still this typo on the "F3" screen, the problem with the umlauts and/or [{\²³~ with some programs and the switch off problem.Firefox (seems to work properly now): I installed Firefox 1.0.3 with the installer of www.firefox-browser.de to have a German edition of firefox. But before I installed Firefox1.0.3 I installed GTK2 (with myDSL). This had not been working, so I had installed Firefox 1.0PR (with myDSL). Then I installed 1.0.3. The installation of Abiword (with myDSL) after this seems to have inactivated/turned off GTK2! A right click on desktop->myDSL->Update to GTK2 solved the not starting problem of firefox 1.0.3, I think! By "reactivating"(?) GTK2, Firefox 1.0.3 is working again (even after a reboot)! --- With best wishes, Melancholie Posted by ke4nt1 on April 25 2005,16:19
i'm curious to know if you are using the abiword.dsl ,which is a very early version of abiword, or the abiword-gtk2-2.0.10.dsl version ? The earlier one was a complete package that probably has within it some earlier versions of libs and deps that would cause the issue you see with the later firefoxes. The *-gtk2-*.dsl apps in the gtk2 portion of the repository all have elements of gtk2, defoma, pango, perl, etc., etc., removed from the packages. They share the same gtk2.dsl package, so no overwriting occurs, and they should get along harmoniously. Let us know. 73 ke4nt Posted by Melancholie on April 25 2005,18:51
I clicked on MyDSL->Apps->Abiword.dsl.info (version 2.0.1)! So I always should click on MyDSL->Gtk2->... first? Yes, this could be the reason.Power down problem: I have installed DSL to hard disk once more! Now "KNOPPIX halted" is shown yellow, and my computer turns off automatically (but I do not know why; it seems that the first installation was not 100% correct(??)). I will have a look at this phenomenon and will report when it will occur again! --- Melancholie Posted by Melancholie on April 28 2005,16:32
Hmm, it is really weird but sometimes my computer turnes off automatically, sometimes the PC has to be turned off and the most time my computer freezes like I have written before. I think the KNOPPIX hardware detection is not 100% ok for my PC in this case!? Is this possible? Or is there a option I could change to adapt DSL for my old PC? What I have seen so far the shutdown works normally when using DSL on LiveCD. But I am not sure, because I am switching off my computer just once per day (especially because Linux does not need to be rebooted all the time like windows) --- Melancholie

k...I'm back on the same bug i was complaining about before...The midnight commander thingy was sorta fixed by 1.0 (maybe earlier...i dunno), but i'm still seeing permissions problems. Currently you can start mc as root, close it, and successfully open it as dsl (thank you). However, it seems that you can't open mc as root and then open it as dsl while the root mc is still running. Apparently root is taking control of a tmp file and not allowing dsl to open it? I'm not sure at this point, but it is rather frustrating if you are editing a file as root in mc and want to open up a new instance of mc as dsl....seems you have to close root mc and re-open the file in another program. EDIT: Maybe it's just a problem with mc occasionally screwing up, but it seems to happen with enough regularity to be a small problem. It seems to happen only the first time, and only if you don't close the root mc at all. If you initially start a root mc, close it, reopen, and then start mc as dsl, things are apparently okay. I am experiencing the same problem: when i try to shutdown the PC after a HD install, either through console commands or with the desktop menu, the screen freezes and i cannot input anything from keyboard even if an apllication launches. After some time the pc does not shutdown, although you can hear a sound that you usually hear 1-2 seconds before shutdown (that happens repeatedly). Another problem is very slow IO performance: when i try to dd a partition it lasts for ages. My hardware is intel P4 2.66, 1GB RAM, Gigabyte GIG875 Ultra motherboard. The live CD is ok however. Posted by cbagger01 on May 01 2005,15:08
If you are getting slow IO performance, you probably don't have dma enabled. You can either boot with: dsl dma or after bootup type: sudo hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda where hda is the device name for the desired hard drive. Posted by 123456789 on May 02 2005,16:47
Thanks for the info, i assumed DMA is default! What about CPU running at 99% when performing dd? Posted by cbagger01 on May 02 2005,16:53
If you have dma turned OFF, then your CPU will spike. I don't know of other reasons.

Unfortunately still CPU at 99% although having booted with dsl dma option and still not able to shutdown the PC...thanx for the help however! |
