I have a Trendnet wi-fi card which has the ACX111 chipset, and it works great with Slackware 10.1. I think if you added the driver for this chipset it would add a lot of value to the distribution. It weighs in at 452 kB. Here is the link to Debian's information page on it.< http://packages.debian.org/testing/net/acx100-source > Posted by SaidinUnleashed on April 28 2005,17:20
452k is a very large module...We try to cram as much as possible into DSL, but space is always the primary concern. Right now, I think we cram 2 editors and a mp3 player into the same amount of space you are wanting for a single module... -J.P. Posted by Yaks Hairbrush on April 28 2005,22:47
Wow. I didn't realize that those apps *could* be made that small. Looking at it from that angle does make it seem a rather large addition. Keep up the great work!

Actually, your module is bigger than the apps I was referring to :P
Total (2 editors + mp3 player) 448.7k :P -J.P. Posted by l0st on April 29 2005,12:13
Priorities, priorities. Before we dismiss the proposal to include the driver in the base DSL, I believe the choices should be evaluated and judged according to whose merits being greater.(woah holy shit too much official speech-dom) anyway 1) 2 editors + mp3player: granted, mpg321 is an essential component, but do we really need 2 editors? Of course everyone has their preferences and the crew tend to give users a choice, but under the circumstance of having: 2) Wireless Drivers: Is this particular model/brand popular, or at least have a large enough audience to warrant inclusion? I am not American and I have absolutely no knowledge of brand popularity (exceptions being cisco) so it is up to the crew to decide. me & my 2 cents Posted by l0st on April 29 2005,12:16
Before I go off, if including the drivers was deemed unsuitable, would it be possible to include it in the myDSL repository, or is the case different with drivers? That additional factor can tip the scales because a text editor most absolutely can be made into an extension, while (to my knowledge) drivers may or may not. The driver in question supports all wi-fi cards with the ACX100/ACX111 chipset. The list of devices which contain this chipset is here:< http://acx100.sourceforge.net/matrix.html > I'm so used to seeing things measured in MB and GB that when I see something measured in KB, it seems small. But 452 KB out of a 50MB CD is nearly a full 1%. The % of users for whom this module is useful would then need to be fairly large to warrant its inclusion. Posted by clivesay on April 29 2005,14:39
Sure, packaging up as a personal mydsl file is always an option. You could write a wrapper to install the module and run the wrapper in bootlocal.sh at startup. All kinds of possibilities Chris Posted by cbagger01 on April 29 2005,21:21
Just like the alsadebs.dsl or the xfree86.dsl or the nividia.dsl, if is possible to create a myDSL extension for this device that works with the existing kernel, then it is a good compromise. It can even be made into a public *.dsl extension if the drive user license terms are freely distributable. Just like we used to do for the forcedeth module back in the old days:P -J.P. Posted by lefty.crupps on Mar. 20 2006,22:49
Does anyone know if this acx100/acx111 driver was in fact made into a *.dsl extension? The native driver would be great, but the 2.4 kernel makes the installation difficult.I cannot get ndisWrapper to use the Windows drivers, for whatever reason (the pcmcia card worked under Puppy and ndiswrapper, but not under any other distros that I've tried) |
