Hi guys!

Well I think the title says it all. In DSL-embedded it's impossible to mount /mnt/hdb the way it should be done, at least the way I used to  do it.

Have fun guys,

mmm..It happens to me too.
I did a HD install on a second drive. swap partition is in that hd too so DSl is in Hdb2
I guess lilo changed mbr of hdb, and that's why it didn't come up when I rebooted.
But the strange thing is that I used a boot option (can't remember sintax, it was kind of bootfromhd=/dev/hdb2 ) and it didn't find any kernel there.

can it be related to Meo's problem?

Hi davide!

No, I don't think the problems are related. I'm using dsl-embedded on a usb-drive and doing this the virtual drive in qemu comes up as /mnt/hdb (or just hdb). But in the 1.1 version it can't be mounted neither with mount-app or through an xshell as root. This is possible with the 1.0.1 version. So my guess is that something isn't the way it should be with the most rescent version of dsl-embedded. It is possible though to mount it with /mnt/sda1 mounted and using something like "#mount /mnt/sda1/qemu/harddisk /mnt/test -o loop" but I don't think this is the way it's supposed to be. Thanks anyway for your input!

Have fun out there,
meo

Because you are not running DSL, but a customized remaster.

Hi again!

First some fact. I'm presently running dsl-embedded as is with no changes at all. I'm running it from an usb-drive booted with a cdrom because my bios doesn't support booting directly from usb. Under these conditions it is not possible to mount /mnt/hdb from mount.app for example. Yes it works running from within windows but since I have an 4+ years old laptop it works a little bit on the slow side. So usually I use DSL as laid out above and make no mistake I REALLY LIKE DSL AND ALWAYS HAVE SINCE I STARTED USING IT.

Have fun Y'all,
regards meo

Now that we finally know what your booting environment is,
that is quite different than what your original post would lead one to believe.

Yes, how would the liveCD know about the virtual environment of Qemu?
I have not addressed that other than what the standard Knoppix boot option allows, i.e., booting with the fromhd=/dev/sda1

Hi again!

Actually I'm booting it this way: fromhd=/dev/sda1 qemu frugal so qemu is recognized. With DSL 1.0.1 there were no problems mounting hdb wirh mount.app or in a shell as root. With DSL 1.1 though it doesn't work. And it isn't my foult if someone jumps to conclusions and reads between the lines instead of asking. And I can't understand how it was possible to get it wrong after the following post I did to explain the matter (the post before your first where you assume that the trouble lies in a bad remastering).

However HAVE FUN,
regards meo

meo,
Lets recap, your posts are very strongly negative, "from impossible to mount", to "can't save settings", to "can't have a clean desktop". Three posts in three topics. All very "loaded" not a single one framed as a question. Given the information posted I could not reproduce your error. I actually, had to follow you in all three topics and stopped what I was working on and tried booting several ways, no errors  When in the thread about saving settings, I question you about what's different, you tell me that you are running a remaster. So of course, since I cannot reproduce the error, I am going to assume its the remaster. All three posts are related to a base problem. Now the "qemu" option was made for BIOS booting off the pendrive to recognize the Qemu environment. Quite frankly, I have never even attempted to run the system in which you are attempting. And none of your initial posts indiciated how you were attempting to run the system. I am not a mind reader. I can tell you the only change in 1.1 was to try to allow permission of user dsl to the virtual drive when booting from pendrive via BIOS. So an unintended use of DSL, i.e., the way that you are attempting, may have been impacted. Now that I finally have the specifics, I will investigate.

May this be an example to all, there are so many ways to run/install/configure DSL that when one experiences a problem, it is always best to disclose as much information as possible. What version, how installed, how booted, what options, etc. Doing an open source project is many times a thankless task with everyone never satisfied always demanding more,  all I ask  is to  please show a little respect by framing your post as a question and not post inflammatory or otherwise "loaded" posts and in multiple topics.

I think we all want DSL to succeed, in order to this to happen, in order for "bugs" to be fixed. it does no good to make generalized statements of failure without the specifics.

I have found the issue and it has been corrected.

Please note that this only affects the dsl-embedded-1.1.zip. And only affects the other means of booting, i.e., non-qemu booting.

It in no way has any affect with the standard iso's isolinux, syslinux, or for the liveCD, frugal, etc.

A new dsl-embedded-1.1.zip has been posted to ibiblio.org

Hi roberts and thanks!

First of all I want to mention that I really appreciate all the hard work you guys put up making this wonderful distro. But I don't like being injustly labelled as the "bad guy". Two of my posts were just nice QUESTIONS( Does the line: All very "loaded" not a single one framed as a question; ring a bell). And I certainly don't find them "very strongly negative" as roberts put it. I like DSL and really wish the best for this distro. To do a real "recap" check the three posts in question below and see if you can justify your previous posts in this thread:

Title: “How can I get a clean desktop in dsl-embedded?”
Explanation: “Running from usb-drive in Windows”

Another question!

How can I get a clean desktop (without enhacement or icons) running DSL in Windows from a usb-drive? Thanks in advance!

Have fun (but stay out of trouble),
meo

Title: Saving settings in dsl-embedded
Explanation: Can it be done in virtual hd?

Hi Y'all!

Is it possible make the backup on the virtual hd without crashing something vital for qemu? Thanks in advance for answers!

Have fun guys, but stay out of trouble,
meo

Title: Impossible to mount /mnt/hdb in DSL 1.1
Explanation: It only works with -o loop

Hi guys!

Well I think the title says it all. In DSL-embedded it's impossible to mount /mnt/hdb the way it should be done, at least the way I used to do it.

Have fun guys,

Have fun Y'all and thanks for all the good work,
