I can't find a better distroForum: User Feedback Topic: I can't find a better distro started by: jesseakc Posted by jesseakc on May 19 2005,15:22
The past couple of days I've been on a distro kick. Downloading ISOs, borrowing them from friends, you name it. I have searched and search for a distro that could compair. But I have found nothing that comes close! DSL is amazing. You can do so much with it, and it comes in such a damn small package. I may stray, but I will always return to my first Linux love. Thank you DSL!Jesse Posted by ke4nt1 on May 20 2005,15:53
It does run nicely on some of my older/slower gear.. ( 233 etc.. )But the way it runs on my faster stuff, WoW !! Loading the entire OS into ramspace, using the toram option, onto a box with some muscle, really gets me smilin' ... 73 ke4nt Posted by meo on May 20 2005,16:57
Hi Y'all!I tend to agree. I started reading about linux for like 10 years ago and have had the opportunity to try out at least around 60 different distros during some years (and many versions of several of them) and my personal favourite is DSL. I have been using it for well over a year now and I find every new version exciting. I'm kind of like "hanging on the doorhandle when there is a wholesale in a store" when I expect a new version being released (I've beaten distrowatch several times). So the developers are doing an incredible effort that I sincerely appreciate. Most of my hardware is supported from scratch and I have pretty special setup. With most distros it takes a lot of tweaking to get even close. So you developers, Thank you and keep your spirit up because a lot of persons in the linux world truly appreciate your hard effort. Have fun everyone out there, Best wishes meo Posted by clivesay on May 20 2005,17:19
I look at my 20gig (almost full) XP partition and ask myself "Why?". Why do I have to have all these programs loaded on my partition? All of them sitting there, some running in startup, and I'll most likely not use them today or tomorrow or the next day. I have come to appreciate I can load up DSL with only the apps I need to use immediately with many more waiting in the wings via mydsl. I have learned that I need very few apps on a daily basis. That allows me to load toram and run VERY fast. That is so nice. Basically, I run my big 'ol CPU box with a 256mb usb drive (A PNY 256 for $9). That's really insane when you think about it! Not at all, makes/saves room on your HD for all those mp3's ! Besides, you can't take your installed XP hard drive out, and go run it in another box/cpu .. XP usually freaks when it sees another mobo/cpu brand/arch. On the contrary, your pendrive ( DSL ) would be just as happy running on your P4 today, as your K6 yesterday, and your Athlon64 tomorrow.. 73 ke4nt Posted by WoofyDugfock on May 21 2005,12:40
Indeed, indeed. Toram it makes my old p3 just fly. And a cheap new laptop runs like the blazes. |
