Could we have a frugal section in the forum like hd install?

Just my own opinion, but apart from the installation i don't think there's really any difference between frugal and liveCD...most issues people might have with one would also apply to the other.

That's a good point. Once it's working I guess the only difference is possible persistency. I was kinda just frustrated with getting GRUB to behave.

Drop into IRC sometime and get some live help if you are getting frustrated.Frugal is really easy with Grub, and with persistancy it's even better than it used to be. Here's my grub entry for a frugal on hda1 on my toshiba 420cds (on a CF ^_^), with LOTS of stuff disabled/activated/set at boot.
-J.P. editus: the kernel line stretches to two lines here, but don't split it. It has to be on a single line. Posted by SuperLou on May 26 2005,15:15
Hey Saidin,Yeah, I followed your tutorial in the talk section. It worked fine for booting into DSL and loading the Grub.dsl pack. However, when i try "grub-install /dev/hda" I get the following error: "/dev/hda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive." I use the following APPEND style things in the Grub menu: frugal (not really sure why, you used in your example last post, i get the same error wether or not i include it), opt=hda3 home=hda3 restore=hda3 mydsl=hda3 I have been trying to read the documentation for GRUB but have made no progress in improving anything. Thanks, Louis Posted by SaidinUnleashed on May 26 2005,15:22
I usually use something like this to install grub. I dunno about Debian's pre-made scripts.

I did it from an xterm/bash (is this ok?). I get the following errors:- For "root (hd0,0) - Error 21: Selected disk does not exist" - For "setup (hd0) - Error 12: Invalid device requested" They are similar errors to when i enter the grub prompt and type install or root commands. What kind of disk are you trying to install grub to?SCSI or SATA MIGHT be seen as sd0 to grub, even though Linux sees it as hda. Just rung grub from an xterm, type root ( and hit tab to see all the possible completions. -J.P. Posted by SuperLou on May 26 2005,17:02
I've been trying all sorts of combinations including sd0. It seems to llike fd0. When i type root at the grub prompt, it returns:"(fd0): Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x0"" Posted by ke4nt1 on June 12 2005,14:41
Late coming into this thread, but..First, I manually made a " device.map " file with this one line in it. (hd0) /dev/hda Put it in your /boot/grub dir.. Then, I got around the issue of no recognized drives by using this command syntax.. grub-install /dev/hda --root-directory=/mnt/hda1 Hope it helps.. 73 ke4nt Posted by SuperLou on June 12 2005,17:49
Yeah, that's what I ended up doing with the root-directory bit. Although i've got about three layers of boot and grub folders. Is that normal?

What does grub have to do with frugal? I just run the frugal install from the menu Maybe there should be a separate Grub section Posted by SuperLou on June 13 2005,02:18
Maybe a boot method section? I don't really know. I'm just happy when it boots, period. Although when it does the 400mhz powerhouse rocks my socks.
