Linux Program NamesForum: User Feedback Topic: Linux Program Names started by: aorta Posted by aorta on June 16 2005,18:20
I have just shown my DSL rebuilt P166 to my wife who is a teacher at the same school as me, she loved firefox and said she wants one in her class room, however she killed herself laughing at the word processor called Beaver and the spreadsheet that looks like Slag (Siag) You see children will pick up on those names, I can guarantee it. Could this be why microsoft have ruled so far where they have word we have Beaver and where they have excel we have slag? Even the title of this distro Damn small linux is faintly amusing to a junior school pupil.Just a thought (not a very serious one) Aorta (Phil) Posted by green on June 16 2005,18:32
i was thinking Beaver meant, wood, as in tree, which turns into paper, with is a document, cause Beavers chew on trees....not sure what 'slag' is.... or Siag for that matter... I guess i'm naive... Posted by clacker on June 16 2005,19:18
I don't think the name Beaver is what kills it, it's just no where near as good as Word. Like siag is no Excel.Have you tried open office? If you have the memory (or the swap space) they have friendlier names. Posted by silicon_intelligence on June 18 2005,11:34
I'm with Phil, as a newbie [2 days old] I also had to chuckle at the concept of writing on a beaver....I tried [without success] to rename some items. Posted by hawki on June 18 2005,13:36
Hi Personally I like the fact that DSL and most open source software does not have to be commercially viable or politically correct. Besides I think one of BEAVERs creators last name starts with B and the rest is pulled from EARLY ADVANCED EDITOR. And SIAG is from "Scheme In A Grid". Anyway what could be more funny than naming a computer company "APPLE" or a progamming language "JAVA" Posted by RoGuE_StreaK on June 18 2005,13:36
Well, when you put it that way... To rename the desktop icon, just edit the .lnk file in home/dsl/.xtdesktop (hidden directory, press "H" in emelfm to see it). Renaming the .lnk file itself doesn't do anything, hit "edit" and it, ironically, will open in Beaver, then just change "caption" to whatever other furry aquatic critter you can think of... Platypus!*nix names are often better than their ms/mac counterparts, in my opinion. What i dislike is when the names make absolutely no sense to me, making it difficult to remember: dlpsh? xmkmf? disnbi? chfn? Posted by adraker on June 19 2005,00:04
