Love it, but have DSL freezing issueForum: User Feedback Topic: Love it, but have DSL freezing issue started by: TreyV Posted by TreyV on July 21 2005,16:52
I've fiddled around with 1.1, .2, and .3 so far and think it's a sweet distro, but I have had one serious issue with it.DSL seems to have a nasty habit of freezing when I've run it on my laptop. I've been running it toram, but usually within half a hour it just freezes solid and I have to physically power down and reboot. I have 512mb of ram and a 2.8 Celeron, so I don't see how I could be running out of resources so fast. With 1.1 and 1.2 it would inevitably freeze if I walked away and let it sit for 15 minutes (roughly) but the other night 1.3 froze solid right in front of me after only having been booted less than a half an hour, which was a new occurance. What the heck is happening? I really want to use this distro more, but but using it in 20 minute increments isn't an option! What forum would be best to ask more about this in? I had a similar problem when I first started usiing DSL on my laptop. I had it installed on my hard drive. However my hard drive eventually died. I replaced the hard drive with an IDE to CF adapter and a 500Mb CF. I have not had a moments trouble since. I think my hard drive was intermittantly failing and causing the problem before it finally died completely. I don't know how you are running DSL, but I just thought I would relay my experiences just in case you might have the same problem. Posted by TreyV on July 21 2005,21:00
I boot from the CD into the ramdisk with the 'toram' boot option.Would mounting the partitions on the laptop harddrive cause these this problem? DSL mounts them all in a snap (XP, linux, fat32) so I hadn't really seen that as a problem. Posted by mgmont on July 21 2005,22:03
I don't know if that would cause your laptop to freeze or not. However, if your hard drive is easily removable, you could remove it and just run with the live cd and ram for a while as an experiment and see if it still freezes. If it still freezes, at least you have eliminated your hard drive as the source of the problem. If the laptop does not freeze anymore, maybe it is the hard drive. I think I will try running from the cd for a while and make sure not to mount any drives, or one or the other. I will see if it locks up then.

Sigh, well I've gone and purchased a CF/IDE adaptor and frugal installed on a CF card using the frugal script with 1.4. That went swimmingly actually, but DSL still likes to freeze periodically. I'm puzzled as to what is going on. It's not like it's running out of resources since I have 512mb of ram and it will freeze with nothing running. I've had it freeze and xmms is still playing a stream in the background. No mouse/keyboard/whatever inputs will make the system do anything at that point, and I have to push the system power button to restart the system. Does anyone else have this issue? It's really freakin' annoying and makes me want to stop bothering with this distro entirely!

You might try booting with the new 'lowram' boot option and see if that makes a difference. That code boots with a bunch of services disabled. If that works, you might be able to narrow down the issue. Chris Posted by aldsl on Aug. 14 2005,02:43

You should ask short and precise questions! You can access every found (and mounted partition by knoppix using emelfm. It is similar to the win explorer. By default the partitions are in /mnt/ You have to mount your partitions first because the partitions are not mounted automatically (You can change this mounting behaviour). You can mount partitions using the application you can see on the desktop (this app with the volume button and the hard drive icon and the net statistics. sorry I do not know the name right now). At least please cut back on the line spacing =o)Also, please don't post a pile of questions in an unrelated thread...particularly when the original issue has not been resolved. 2) It's all *basically* the same. A terminal, or x term, would be the interface used to access bash (or sh, ksh, ash, etc.), such as aterm or rxvt. These are technically virtual terminals (terminal emulators), but are commonly referred to as terms or xterms. You have access to the same commands as you would from the base system without the gui loaded on top. Bash is the default shell in DSL and most other Linux distros. This is where the magic happens...commands are run, scripts are written, programs are connected to other programs...basically everything done in a typical Linux machine begins with logging into a bash shell. Bash can be replaced with one of several other shells and scripting languages, but i have no experience to explain that one. The "root" shell is the same as any other, except that you are logged into it as root, which means you have the power to create and to destroy. 6) It sounds like you broke the CD. Check out the search feature for these forums...I personally can't help you with this problem, but it sounds like something that was been covered at least a few times already. |
