Here is a weird one.  My 56k Zoom external modem got taken out by lightening.  I had an old Zoltrix external hardware modem.  Under windoze (both w95 and wXP) it works with same standard generic builtin hardware modem driver that worked with Zoom modem.  However it will not work under DSL or BeOS whereas the Zoom modem worked fine.  Lights start moving around on front of modem, but it wont dial.  It definitely is a hardware serial modem and should be interchangable with any other hardware serial modem or so I would think. Yes its on same port using same serial cable as Zoom modem and it worked on windoze without making any changes.  Been long time since I've used it, but seems like it used to work with some early version of Mandrake.  Comments?

I think I have an answer. Get an older version of DSL, say 0.5.3, which has WvDial. That ought to pick up your modem. I had to remaster my DSL 0.6.2 and put WvDial in there to get my modems to work. None of them will work with the DSL versions past 0.5.3, (The 0.6.x versions). These modems I have are not cheap, one of the PCMCIA modems set me back over $200.00, so I had to put
Wvdial in there.

Here is an old howto of mine that has some pointers on using Wvdial:
