When I backup my settings with DSLpanel -> Backup/Restore what is the name of the file where the data goes?  I'm backing up to hda1.

backup.tar.gz
It will be in the root of hda1

Is the name of this file something that can be made configurable? I think it would be a very handy way to be able to have multiple users on a live-cd or frugal-install based system.

Perhaps it could be made such that a specific filename is called for on boot via cheatcode?

just a thought.

You can sorta do it with the myDSL system.  Athough backup.tar.gz is loaded *after* any myDSL apps, you can rename backup.tar.gz to something like zzzzzz.tar.gz and have it load after any myDSL apps you might have auto-loading.  Put the archive in a subdirectory, such as "d2d", then use the the boot option "mydsl=hda1/d2d".
