Just burnt the DSL ISO and must admit that I am very impressed!!Tomorrow I am going to do a hard drive install I like it that much. I also want to make a live CD to help repair both linux and windows boxes, I understand that you can install programs you want and then burn a live CD that has them on. What I will need is a decent antivirus (f-prot?) and a file manager that can read and write to NTFS partitions. Any suggestions? Also if anybody can point me to a walk through of what I want to do it would be appreciated. I have used many OSs over the years but I think with DSL I may have found a home! May I be so bold as to suggest NOT performing a hard drive install ?Instead, consider running the Live CD toram (if you have enuf, 128Mb suggested) or a frugal install, which is virtualy bulletproof. The hard drive install can become tweaked in the wrong manner just like any other hard drive install. However, Live or Frugal will not. A reboot will fix anything I manage to screw up whilst playing around with things I have no knowledge of. I suggest reading the Wiki and searching the forums, and reading the PDF documents/walkthru's that Clivesay has contributed. These things will change the way you think about your personal computing. Seriously. Posted by adssse on Sep. 12 2005,04:18
I second green's idea. I would recommend a frugal install over a hd install. I believe that most people that have tried both would do the same. It makes it a breeze to use the mydsl extensions since you can simply reboot to uninstall it. Also as was previously stated with the compressed image on one partition and another partition with your mydsl, home & opt, it really protects you against yourself if you tweak something you shouldnt have. Your call, just my humble opinion.

Thanks GuysI take on board what you say about a frugal install and will give it a go. Any suggestions for antivirus and file manager (incl NTFS) programs? I cannot see any with .dsl extentions. At the moment I have a dual boot with xandros & winXP, will a frugal install be added to the xandros Lilo? Posted by mikshaw on Sep. 12 2005,13:56
a file manager can't control what filesystem types are writeable. There is nothing yet in DSL or the myDSL packages (that i know of) which will allow writing to NTFS. You might be better off finding a distro which is built specifically for rescue, and use DSL for more typical computing needs.

The INSERT project is a rescue livecd that is based on a stripped down knoppix like DSL. It exists for the expressed purpose of resucing computers and has a NTFS write program (called captive NTFS).My advice is to give the Ultimate Boot CD With INSERT a try. This CD includes a customized INSERT that includes antivirus program and a better Captive-NTFS script. Posted by AwPhuch on Sep. 13 2005,00:57
I use DSL with the samba.dsl hotloaded to CDROM..I then mount the NTFS drive, and then use emelfm run as root to mount a windows share on one of my network drives...then just literally copy the entire hda1 or whatever to the samba/windows share The M$ box running the windows share doesnt even know the difference..then after I know all the data is backed up (and scanned by antivirus on the M$ machine w/ the active resident shield or on-access scan (yes I run 2 antivirus on my M$ machines)) and kapow...all data recovery! But the < UBCD > is another one of my system recovery tools (its a freeking mazing) in what it can do! Brian AwPhuch Posted by Karl J on Oct. 11 2005,13:12
As complete and diversified as DSL is and as talented and persistent as its contributors are, I find it hard to believe that read/write to NTFS isn't already incorporated as a core function or failing that, that it doesn't exist as a readily available easy to install extension. This is not a complaint or a criticism, just an observation from someone who made a DSL flash drive specifically to do minor M$ repairs to unbootable laptops without floppies or CDROMs (I know there are other solutions, DSL is one that I wanted). I'm not convinced yet that I can't do this with what's currently available, but it's much more difficult than I had imagined to perform this single task. I would happily devote the time and energy to solving this need if I had the requisite skills, but sadly I do not. So for now, DSL remains more of a toy than a tool for me, a wonderful, amazing one at that.

What would it take to get a NTFS.dsl compiled or built for DSL?How safe do you feel trying to modify a NTFS type partition? Brian AwPhuch |
