Hi, I was trying to set up an electronic picture frame using DSL and an old laptop with no HD, just a CDROM. The ability to easily remaster the distribution is wonderful, and I burned a disc with pictures and tools. I was trying to use "zgv" with frame buffer graphics in "slide show" mode, but unfortunately it didn't get along with the laptop video. This, after some wasted time compiling it statically on another machine. It didn't look like anything else included with DSL will do a slide show ("xzgv" doesn't have a slide show mode!), I couldn't find a good program with minimal dependancies, and I didn't want to spend *all* my time doing static compilations, so I whipped up something in Java which can be found at < http://www.medcosm.com/pictureframe.html > and works fine. Reburning CD's was just too slow, so with $13 and a few days I had an 810 MB HD which runs DSL with enough room for many pictures. Much easier than CD-only, but makes some noise. The silent compact-flash route (see the DSL store) is my suggestion for anyone doing this. Has anyone else used DSL for a picture-frame from an old laptop? How did you do it? Are there any applications included with DSL which will perform slide-show mode? BTW, my gratitude to the DSL authors for releasing such a fine product Posted by laughing_gas on July 29 2004,22:04
