Not the slowest box you use DSL on. Not the fastest. I want to know about the box you use most with DSL. The one you spend all the time you spend tinkering with, late into the night. Or whatever. Your normal, everyday box that you use DSL on. Putting this in UF, because it's where most of the non-regulars go first, and I want their input too. Posted by adssse on Oct. 08 2005,02:24
Great poll, I am really interested to see the results as more and more vote. Mine is 233mhz and thanks to dsl I use it daily.

i'm using DSL on a P133 laptop w/32MB RAM, it's about the only modern OS that will run on it. IE got trashed on the win95 install, so DSL made sense. It's still not quit ready for everyday use, but i'm working on getting it up to scratch for my needs. It's a fun experiment so far.

My DSL system is a Compaq Presario 1200 laptop with a 500MHz K6, 64MB RAM, and a hard drive install. My desktop with a 800 MHz Duron and 192MB RAM used to have a frugal install, but it currenly has Xandros.

I use it on a 800mhz old emachine 256k ram, Its perfect My wife uses windows me on the same machine for school (they are very picky on using MS word and we cant get rid of it for the time being) I like the live idea, never any viruses or spyware. I have another machine with a celeron 2.6 w/ 512k ram that I use as a pvr with xp on it (too many driver problems for mythtv)anyway excelent extremely fast program and it makes me dread loading windows. thanks Posted by MethodOne on Oct. 10 2005,21:19
I also use it on two computers with a 2 GHz Pentium 4 and 512MB RAM at my college. I usually listen to the Digitally Imported trance stream and play netplay games with ZSNES.On my Compal DL70 laptop with a 1.7 GHz Pentium M and 1GB RAM, DSL runs fine, but the screen looks a little stretched out. I would rather have the resolution to be at 1680x1050 than 1400x1050 Posted by IMQ on Oct. 12 2005,18:26
I usually test DSL on slower hardware, currently a Compaq Armada M700 with P3 450MHz and 192 MB RAM. Not a speedy laptop by today standard.I am testing ArkLinux 2005.2 RC3 on this laptop. I've thinking about doing a harddisk install of DSL or something similar in the future since these little gems are perfect for this type of hardware. Posted by yng68bld on Oct. 14 2005,05:49
I am running dsl hd install as a web (xlampp suite,) ftp, ssh servers on a celeron 333 with 256 MB ram without x-window and it run better than my duron 1 gig/ 512 MB ram with Mepis installed. Still having a few problem with apt-get but for now it's the best OS for this old junky system.:D

How strange the "1.01 - 1.5GHz" has no votes so far, its like when people want to use old hardware they go to extremes. I primarly use DSL on a Pentium Pro 200 (64 ram, big hdd etc) at the moment, it used to get piroiry on my main computer AMD 2000+ (512 ram at the time, good videocard) but it would have been a waste of a gaming system to put dsl on it, support is too limited (on linux generaly also).I might change in the future, but its not looking good at them moment for my ati radeon to be playing GTA:SA on linux anytime soon, oh well. At lest I didnt PAY for windows... Posted by akebonoo on Oct. 22 2005,10:59

166mhz P1 on an AT board with 96mb 72pin SIMMs for ram, a 2mb cirrus pci video card, an old crystal ISA sound card NE2000 ISA ethernet card 2gb hard drive 16x cdrom It was my dad's machine, with win98se and dial up. Needless to say it was a miserable thing to use, so I gave him a faster box and took it to play with linux on. DSL2 was the ticket. Puppy may have worked, but I find it to have a "stiff" feel and prefer DSL if hardware allows. Very nice default desktop too. Now its like a new machine. Of course Firefox is slow as hell on it, but Firefox is slow on anything lol. I expected it to be and patched Dillo rocks anyway. Great job guys! Posted by brianw on Oct. 24 2005,18:06
Sites not too bad. Realtively clean layout. Software and any support is very expensive, bloated and unreliable. The hardware to support that bloated software is also expensive. DSL has super support, inexpensive and runs on almost anything. Unless you are a dedicated gamer DSl offers everything a normal user could want and need. Posted by JustoTech on Oct. 25 2005,00:26
My DSL system is a Compaq Armada M700. Its a P3 850MHz with 128MB of RAM. It ran horribly with XP Pro but I tried DSL from CD and it did good so I did a HD-Install and this machine runs as well as my homebrew Athlon XP 1900!

Pii 366mhz (pentium not celeron) 288mb of ram(max it'll hold) 12gb hdd, DVD/CDRom, NeoMagic MagicGraph128XD NM2160 agp, 440bx/82443bx motheboard (cant get agp up) all inside a nice lookin Gateway Solo 2500 case with a good lookin 12" tft SVGA lcd monitor. This laptop has some issues, and may force me into a bloated distro, but i'm going to try very hard to tackle DSL i love what it does, how it does it, and why it was done. Anyway THANKS for a great distro, I also have a thinkpad similar specs, runs flawlessly on that machine, this one(the gateway) being the problem child is my current favorite, thats me always rootin(hehe pun) for the underdog. I've assembled a computer using old spare parts and was using DSL 1.4 and 1.5 and just installed DSL 2RC on it. All the three versions run flawlessly on this machine. It has a 233 MHz Pentium MMX CPU, 128 MB SDRAM, 3.3GB HD, an S3 Virge/DX PCI video card, an SB AWE64 ISA sound card, a Realtec PCI network card, and an HP CD Writer. Everything works out of the box.
