Why is DSL forcing people to order the source code by mail for $7?

Your not buying the source code...you are buying a pre-burned copy of DSL

You are buying the CD, and the pretty graphic...

You can download DSL all over the place for free, but for those that feel the OS is worth feel it necissary to support such a great distro by at least buying a cd or donating money

Where can I download the source code for DSL?

The source for the applications is available from their respective developers. We do not modify the source code for our compiled applications. All configuration is done with the default ./configure script that comes with the application's tarball, and through compile-time switches, if needed.

You can get the source for the kernel two ways.

1. Download the 2.4.26-knoppix source .deb from Knoppix.org's source page.

2. Download the 2.4.26 tarball from kernel.org and apply the knoppix patches in the kernelsources.dsl (which is really just the kernel headers + the knoppix patches) to the vanilla 2.4.26 kernel.

The $7 cd is just for people too lazy to collect the sources as they are readily available.

If you are wanting the sources for the custom DSL guis (lua-fltk scripts), init scripts, or what not, they are scripts, and as such are readily readable, copiable, and whatnot, as they exist on the DSL cd.
