Running DSL in New Free VMware PlayerForum: User Feedback Topic: Running DSL in New Free VMware Player started by: BobH Posted by BobH on Nov. 04 2005,05:25
I saw a reference and a description of using the new VMware Player (available for free on the VMware website) to configure and run a virtual machine within another OS. I found a short tutorial on configuring it without having any other VMware product at: http://blog/lorenzoferrara.netHe lays out the building of a virtual HD image using QEMU as well as building a VMware configuration file. I modified the file to load the ISO from cdrom, put in my DSL cdrom, and start DSL (toram) with no effort. While I didn't have much time to "play" at work, it seems to save state so when you restart the VMware Player with your configuration file, it picks up right where you left off. While there may be some drawbacks, the speed within Windows XP seems very close to running DSL directly from a boot. (Seemingly much faster than the QEMU embedded.) I'll look forward to seeing how the more experienced users view and use this. Bob Posted by Linus on Dec. 25 2005,17:20
The address is < http://blog.lorenzoferrara.net/, > and a thread at VMWare clarirfies that they don't see this as a licensing problem "party on" was the quote. Trouble is, the link to the main body of the article at < http://blog.lorenzoferrara.net/pivot/entry.php?id=73#body > is not working today. I'd really like to see the procedure.
