Opera has far better features than Firefox.  I recommend it, but encountered problems under DSL....

When using Opera you definitely want to use the excellent RESTORE feature in DSL to restore bookmarks, etc.  But each time i booted with -- "dsl  restore=fd0"  -- my Opera folder was assigned ownership of "root"!!  [[Same folder was  "dsl.staff"  without the RESTORE. ]]  Trying to open anything in the Opera folder then after the RESTORE was impossible.  Opera would not start.

I have solved this problem by using the WORKER file manager in  "root" mode and changing the ownership of the Opera folder back to  "dsl.staff"  every time i boot.  This is not that much trouble,  but i did try to automate the change by entering a  "sudo chown... "  command in in one of the boot scripts.  Unfortunately  SUDO  has  "many compile options"   [[some Linux site said]]  and i could not get SUDO to work at all.  [[NO, I WAS NOT CAPITALIZING FOR HEAVENS SAKE, I AM JUST tryIN TO MAKE THIS POST READAbbllBLEabbl.]]

So if some expert Linux Lunatic would investigate and find the fix for myDSL Opera when using RESTORE, it would be appreciated...  Also, how about Opera 8.50?

P.S.  If you would put DSL with Opera properly installed on a CD, i bet you could make some real money...

did you try opera850.uci in testing area? I think opera is too big for DSL. It can be used as an extension. BTW. I like Flock.

Hi
I think your trying to hard.  I use Opera exclusively with DSL.  Pop mail, browser, download, notepad, chat, almost everything.  It works great for me.  If you use either the 8.01 .dsl or the 8.50 .uci from the repository they are configured to work with DSL.  You can use the backup/restore function to backup your bookmarks simply by specifying all of the home directory for user dsl or just .opera below that directory.  You can do that by editing the .filetool.lst file.  I would advise not backing up the cache4 and the images subdirectories below .opera since they use a lot of disk and are not really necessary.  You can do that by editing the .xfiletool.lst file.
good luck

To Hawki -- Thank you for your post.  How do you try "easier"??  I am using  Opera 8.01.uci   under Damn Small Linux 1.5.  As explained, it seems it is NOT configured correctly and i am too ignorant to fix.

Have slow dialup internet and have not had time to download Damn Small 2.0.  Is that what you are using?  Just discovered  Opera 8.5 in "testing" area.   I think i will wait until Opera 8.50 fully tested,  configured, entered in main UCI area.  Thanx again for your post.

I have been using Opera 8.5 for a while now on a 1.5 frugal install, no complaints here.

Hi
What I mean by easier is that all of the Opera config files are in /home/dsl/.opera and below.  If you backup and restore that directory you have saved all of your Opera config.  I have moved several computers through various versions of DSL frugal installs and have kept my bookmarks through them all.  I just make sure that I keep a good backup.tar.gz file that contains my home directory.
good luck

Much thanx to Hawki for posting and even more for installing Opera on DSL.

I have found my problem.  It is being a Linux Newbie.  I was not familiar with the constant nuisance of "multi-user logins".  When I started using DSL i just hit return at the boot prompt.  This logs you in as "root". as far as the DSL BACKUP feature is concerned.  So then when you do a RESTORE you get folders owned by "root" which cannot be opened by user "DSL" thus making the RESTORE rather worthless.  Seems to me any BACKUP should assign ownership to "DSL" since RESTORE kinda forces you to login as "DSL"......

Does this deserve attention from Andrews?

I am well aware of .filetool.lst.  I have a Windows boot floppy with a very small DSL backup.tar.gz as well as necessary Windows boot files [[cant print without Windows and always seem to need floppy to boot]] plus Neil Faulks remarkable "V1" DOS file viewer /file manager.  All on one crowded boot disk.  Requires very small backup file for DSL

Thanx again for your posts.
