I'm not used to Fluxbox or DSL yet, but all I'm trying to do is remove the background wallpaper and set the background color to plain black. How can I do this easily?

Thanks

Please provide more information.

What version of DSL are you running?
HOW are you running it? LiveCD, embedded, HD install, etc. ?

Generally, if you are using one of the latest releases, there is a background tool in the DSL control panel.
There should be an icon on the desktop for that. Click it and look at the various buttons to find the one you need.

xsri --color=black
bsetbg -solid black
bsetroot -solid black

Any of those should work

I'm running 2.1b, on an install to hd setup. Everything else is default. There is a background button on the DSL control panel but this only allows me to change it, not blank it out and make background pure black.

Use the xpaint program to create a jpeg thats solid black. Load it into the fluxbox/background directory and just switch to it. Make sure you set it to scale. Now, if I can just figure out how to use different wallpaper on each differnt desktop......

Good idea, a 1x1 pixel black image, scaled. (or tiled)... which is more cpu efficient?

why.....?

Every background setting application will set a solid or gradient color in place of an image...why use an image to do it? Only reason I can think of is if you want a multi-colored or non-linear gradient.  Or is it because you're hesitant to use a command rather than buttons?
Add this to .fluxbox/init:
Code Sample
session.screen0.rootcommand: xsri --color=black

This will give you a black background (without needing an image) no matter what style is used.

As far as setting a different background for each desktop...I don't think it can be done with fluxbox stable.  The development version has a "MacroCmd" command which allows you to chain commands together, so you could set up hotkeys that first change the background and then switch to a specified desktop.  I've heard this can be hard on the cpu if you switch desktops frequently.

dsl-2.2RC1 now has a solid color chooser added to the background/wallpaper GUI tool.

Nice one roberts. Using a solid color rather than an image allows us to get as much cpu out of this as possible,

Hi guys,

Does any of you still run DSL 1.3 ?? I loooove the safari (elephant) background... where can I get that? I would love to have that as my desktop background.. If any of you (or the admin) still have the picture, would you kindly send me one? Thank you!

Currently running DSL 1.5 and when I go to Desktop -> Wallpaper, I see there are 3 options for the background. Now, assume that I already got the safari picture (.png or .jpg), any idea how to put the files into the Wallpaper options?

here is link to the picture that I'm dying to have:

Any help appreciated. Thanks!  :)

Just put the image in /home/dsl/.fluxbox/backgrounds/

Well like you said....some are GUI dependent and can't use commands....so I was just providing an alternate method (however clunky) to someone who might not be comfy in console.
