Can't get fluxbox backForum: X and Fluxbox Topic: Can't get fluxbox back started by: Alkeli Posted by Alkeli on Feb. 20 2006,20:55
Ok so I installed IceWM thu MyDSL and now whenever I startup my laptop, I get JWM and have to switch to fluxbox(with no computer monitor in the corner). how can I get it to startup as fluxbox like it was before?DSL 2.2 with a frugal HD install. Thanks Posted by mikshaw on Feb. 20 2006,21:02
Which icewm did you install? There are a couple of them that overwrite .xinitrc, which breaks things in recent versions of DSL, including the desktop switching. If you installed one of those, you may need to retrieve a fresh .xinitrc file from /etc/skel/ I made a uci version of icewm not long ago that does not touch your personal configs...feel free to try that one (in "testing" section at the the time of this post). It was just the icewm-lite from myDSL. And my /etc/skel is empty. Where can I find xinitrc?

Ok nevermind, dumbass moment (forgot about the dots) ok so I looked at my .xinitrd files in /home/dsl and in /etc/skel and they're both very different, should I just copy the one from /etc/skel to my /home/dsl directory?

Yes. The icewm extension overwrote your .xinitrc file with its own (see...i TOLD you guys that was a bad idea, but did you listen? Nooooooo. Applications should NEVER overwrite personal config files). It broke the use of multiple desktops and anything else that is run from .xinitrc. Posted by Alkeli on Feb. 21 2006,23:53
Ok, so after replacing .xinitrc with the one from /etc/skel my whole system was a mess, it started up with jwm as the window manager but the keyboard wouldn't work, and the mouse could move around on the screen but I couldn't click on anything. So I CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE'ed out of there, put the .xinitrc back to how it was(I backed it up) and now X won't even start.Soooo, I've trashed the HD and I'm reinstalling from scratch. A warning to all: Don't install icewm!!! Posted by wkearney99 on Mar. 01 2006,16:33
Amen to that, the current icewm package utterly screws up an otherwise working 2.2 setup! Just RUN AWAY from icewm Posted by mikshaw on Mar. 01 2006,16:55
When you say "the current icewm package", to what are you referring? The most recent is a UCI in testing, which does not touch your base system or personal files, so there should be no problems associated with that sort of behaviour. The main reason this UCI was built, other than the fact that i kinda dig icewm, is that the other icewm packages had what I'd consider unacceptable design flaws. These flaws have become more evident with recent changes to /home/dsl configs. If there are flaws with icewm.uci, please post in the mydsl forums and i'll do what i can to sort them out. |
