First, I want to introduce myself to the DSL community. Hi! My name is Ty. :D

I'm a long-time Linux fan but DSL is new to me. There are a few things I could use some pointers on.

I have done a sucessfull HDD install with LILO. I have xorg server running and things are going well except...

1. The only text I have seen on the subject states that if I want to enable the Enhanced Desktop permanently, I should uncomment some lines in .xinitrc. I found no commented lines. I'm thinking they have been removed in DSL 2.2b? What do I need to do to get this done?

2. The system is not reading changes made in /home/dsl/.bashrc OR /root/.bashrc. What gives?

3. Also, do I still have to "Backup" on a HDD install? Seems this would only need to be in a frugal or live setup.

Thank you for reading and BTW - I'm having FUN! Great job, great distro!

1. There has been quite a change recently to the desktop applications available in DSL.  There are no longer any dockaps available in the default system, except for wmswallow, which is used for the dmix/mount combo.  The dockapps that were once available have been replaced by torsmo.  As far as I can tell, the default setup is now as enhanced as it will get without adding more applications.

2. I don't know what gives.  Any changes made to $HOME/.bashrc should be apparent when you open a new (non-login) shell.  Would you care to share what changes you've made, and what steps you've taken to test the changes?

3. I assume you do not need to backup if you are using a traditional harddrive install.

OK. Let me try and clarify what I mean about "Full Enhanced Desktop." When I boot the machine and log in with user "dsl", I get the nice desktop background and Torsmo and such, I just don't have any launcher icons like ATerminal, Dillo, Beaver and the like. I have to right-click and choose Desktop/Full Enhanced Desktop to get the desktop icons that show up in the "live bootup." The only reference I have seen about this is from the default "getting_started.html" file and it states:

For the popular enhance (Desktop), just remove the comment in the default .xinitrc.

So, when I edit my default .xinitrc I find no comment on ANY lines. So I'm kinda stuck trying to get my default desktop to show the "Full Enhanced Desktop" all the time.

Second. The changes made in ~/.bashrc would be simple aliases that I call on every Linux box I run. Nothing flashy. Try "alias l='ls -lah'" as an example. The steps to test this would be to simply log out and then log back in. Or try rebooting the machine (not needed, but...) and the shell does not respond to these calls. I dunno why Bash is not recognizing these changes. I know there is other scripting included in the default .bashrc but if you read the code, it still shouldn't matter.

What next?

The icons are made available through the xtdesk application.  If xtdesk is not in .xinitrc, or if there is a command above xtdesk which is not followed by "&", i'd say that is the problem.

I don't know what the problem with .bashrc would be...it works as expected for me.
