In attempt to increase the calc dock size I switched to 640 in xsetup..this solves the calc size for me but all the programs are now 800 and the system is unuseable...if I change grub from vga=normal to the 7xx for 640 will this reduce the file manager to fit the screen along with the bever etc..or are the programs designed for 800 in which case why the option..what is the 7xx number for 640..785? any help on this issue appreciated thanksnote when I installed atvga= 7xx for 640 the dillo consumed the screen so I installed vga=normal at 800 for x and all was fine until I needed a calc..onboard is to slow but dock is fine but for size thus the desire for640 Posted by lovdsl on Mar. 02 2006,06:49
ok..that made no differance..but I can down grade to midnight and use nano at 640 and still use the mail maximized and opera with some modification..so back to 800 and ditch the calc dock and wait 60secs for the calco..I need speed..will increasing the swap make a difference.. in the opening of the programs..will adding 16 meg more ram ?..I have a 50 meg swap to match 48meg ram..the board maxs at 64 and needs pairs..so I would have to round up a pair..I have only singles available..I have a 100 meg swap on a 100 meg drive on ide2 but when I installed it gave a repeating error for the hdc so I removed it and made a 50 meg swap on the first drive..all is functional but slow..the calc being the issue as I do not mind the 5 to 10 but 60 for a calc is not acceptable..So will swap help..how much difference will 16meg make..any thoughts appreciated..will get on the search for ram..thanks Posted by _pathos on Mar. 02 2006,07:07
You can move and resize the windows in fluxbox with Alt+left click and Alt+right click if that helps.also try modifying the fluxbox key shortcuts (ToggleDecor + Maximise will give the fullscreen to the window). Posted by lovdsl on Mar. 02 2006,08:41
Alt + left and right...thanks that's handy..maby it will allow resize of emelfm at 640..will try that..in any case handy tip thanks

I don't know if you are remembering to do this, but if you are using the vga=xxx boot command to change resolution, you need to put dsl first in the order, and it will only affect the resolution of the boot screen. To change the resolution of X you need to run xsetup.sh. If you put restore=hda? [or whatever is your target drive] in the boot line, then the xsetup.sh script will be placed it the backup file and restored on the next boot.More RAM is always better. The swap file doesn't gain too much by being bigger than twice your RAM size. I usually make it slightly bigger just to make room for some of the larger programs. However, the size of the programs you can run will be limited by your RAM size anyway. Posted by lovdsl on Mar. 03 2006,06:18
Thanks doobit..I did get the second drive going as a swap twice the ram size..not much noticable difference but that I can do that now..which is great..and Oh dsl is part of the command? I did not know that..workin on the best possible for this old box..will try on a faster machine later..still need some knowledge..Pathos..thanks again for the alt clicks..does solve for resize generally..some are just better at 800..so stuck with 800 but know I can switch and reset at will.. btw..how fast does my next machine have to be to pop up the calc in 3 sec..it takes calco a wopping 32 on this config..it is my only real complaint all considered..anyway thanks.. Many applications will use a geometry option to set the size of a window when it starts. You can either use something like "-g" or -geometry", or add an entry in .Xdefaults for each application you need to force to fit into 640x480. For example, you could try
I couldn't tell you if this will work...it depends on whether the application supports certain resource names. Posted by lovdsl on Mar. 04 2006,01:06
Thanks..will play with that later..also noticed that I can open the styles as a text file and would like to play with that..currently I am working on access to the second partition..it is there but I can not acess to make dirs and copy or save files..can do this easily in home and home dsl..but think I should have partitioned directory for some of these directories now as I need to archive for reinstalls.the second is on hdc1@130m, hdc2@130m filles the drive as swap. the hda1 is one boot part the drive @420m.room for additions and general personal like..media.not the place for this topic I expect..
