Why won't X start automatically?  I don't want to have to login at a prompt...it would be better for me if it went straight to X.  Is there a way to make it do that?

I assume you did a frugal or hd install and ask to be prompted for x..although new to linux and dsl when I insert dsl it autos to x and when I choose frugal or hd install it autos to x but  I could have made the choice to prompt for x..perhaps you made this choice? when the initial dsl screen pops up you have the time to press f2 and f3 which lists the boot options. or wait and it will boot to x via ram. if you have low ram you can choose to run from hd via the boot option tohd=/dev/hda1. this should also autox..if you choose frugal or install to hd from the menu once booted to x, it will install and boot to x..not sure if this helps. If you are wanting to do this already installed it may be possible to alter the boot menu..I unfortunately do not have this knowledge yet.

If you are talking about seeing the boot screen before DSL does it's hardware detection, then you can opt to put a restore file on a hard drive, or pendrive, or Zip drive, or even a floppy, which will hold your settings choices for X. That way, when you boot you just hit enter at the boot prompt and DSL will find the backup.tar.gz file wherever you have it and restore your X settings.

I want to bypass the command line login.  I want it to go straight to the window manager.

OK, then you need a bootloader, like grub or lilo. You can do a frugal grub install from the liveCD

this is in vmware...it is a regular 50MB install with fluxbox.  It boots with lilo

If it boots with lilo, then it should go directly to X after lilo times out or you hit the enter key. That's what it has to do to run fluxbox. so I guess I don't understand your problem.

Which command line?

The "bootup" command line, or the one that looks kinda like:

dsl#

root#

or

bash#

When dsl boots, it goes to a login prompt at the command line...I can login with dsl or root then it goes into fluxbox.

Sounds like you need a login manager.

Try kdm: apt-get install kdm

Good luck!

Maybe your /etc/inittab has been changed. That's the only thing I know of that would prevent an auto login.  In a typical frugal (50mb) install, there is no login prompt unless you configure it to do so.  ...unless the frugal installer has a multi-user option?

A login manager won't help...all it would do is present you with a prettier login prompt with buttons and pictures. It needs x to be started automatically as well, so it probably wouldn't even work =o)

I am guessing that when you turn on the power and dsl runs through the boot you end at the prompt and have to type StARTX to get to the desktop. if you want to boot and avoid typeing STARTX and go directly to the desktop..in otherword hit power and in a couple mins see the desktop then you have to install without being prompted. it is an option during install. I am not sure what install option you used..but my install boots to X..when I first booted dsl, at the initial dsl screen I pushed f2 and typed expert dsl tohd=hdc1 dsl vga=normal dsl dma..this loaded dsl to my personal partition and ran x..I chose install to hd from the menu and when prompted for the location said hda1..the boot partition..I said yes to install boot loader and choose grub..it rebooted the computer and ask for passwords for root and dsl and continued to X as hd install. this is similar with the frugal install. if you want to boot to X install and boot to x desktop

What this sounds like is a hard drive install and you selected multiple user login during the install.  When you install this way you get the text login prompt.  If you don't choose multiple logins with the hd install you go directly to the dsl user.  I have never done a frugal install so I don't know how it works but I am assuming that the multiple users option is not available.  This really looks like an install with multiple users, probably typical HD install.  I can't remember at this time the exact change in inittab (i think it is) to fix this.

If it is inittab, then this thread might help:
