DSL made me a Fluxbox fan...Forum: X and Fluxbox Topic: DSL made me a Fluxbox fan... started by: tawalker Posted by tawalker on May 26 2006,14:54
Before I started using DSL, I'd never even heard of Fluxbox, despite knowing of quite a few other window managers for X. As I've spent time with the Fluxbox environment, and found all the little tweaks and extra features (keybindings, the slit, themes, customised workplaces, etc.), it has really grown on me, to the point where I chose Fluxbox as the X window manager for our home server, as well as using FB in DSL.I'm curious: is there anyone else on this forum who became a "Fluxbox fan" as a direct result of DSL, to the point where you even want to use it on other machines? Or did you all know about Fluxbox before you found DSL? Thanks, Tim. Posted by mikshaw on May 26 2006,15:35
I learned of Fluxbox from a friend shortly after starting with Linux about 5 years ago, and have used it as my primary window manager ever since. Fluxbox was one of the main reasons I decided to try DSL in the first place (most small distros seem to prefer icewm or xfce), so I guess this relates to your thread in some way =o)

Yes - for one, Puppy Linux chose fvwm95 (IIRC), but one reason I like Fluxbox is that it doesn't try to look like Win95/98/whatever... and as I posted in < another thread >, I'm quite keen on dockapps. (Which reminds me - I still need to get around to sending in a couple of dockapp extensions I threw together...)On-topic, anyway Posted by pr0f3550r on May 27 2006,12:17
With DSL I became a Fluxbox enemy and now I have converted to jwm.By the way, hardcore Windows fanboys are indiffrent to Gnome, kde, Xgl but are fascinated by jwm... serious! Posted by humpty on May 29 2006,08:42
Not a fan of fluxbox, but I use it all the time, frankly because all the rest are even worst !

Fluxbox rocks and all the nay-sayers are a bunch of lame-o's who need to stick with the Microsoft moron's. I've added in all the Fluxbox default themes and downloaded all the one's to my liking off the Freshmeat site....makes DSL more appealing from an eye-candy standpoint.__ ggordon Posted by pr0f3550r on May 30 2006,18:39

I started using Fluxbox on a laptop I rescued from an untimely grave. Its a Toshiba Satellite TC 4700. 850 Meg HD and 24 megs of ram.. I have Debian Woody on it.. and fluxbox for a desktop. I installed Debian on it with about 30 floppies.. since it did not have a CD-ROM.. It was to be sure a labor of love.. In return.. it has served as a travel partner on many trips.. and its been great.. it made a flux box believer out of me.. although it left out some of the larger desktop apps that some might want.. I have found that fluxbox will serve quite well to do any job if you choose your apps carefully. and thoughtfully. I have made converts out of others by letting them see and try that little toshiba.. It also began a love affair I happen to keep with older MAChines that no one seems to want any more. Peace, Mark Posted by ggordon on May 31 2006,22:35
There are two pretty nice themes over in the 'Release Candidate' forum provided by user 'Kerry' I believe......both work great and are alot easier for me to read, since I like the larger fonts for my 'over 50' eyes ggordon Posted by tawalker on June 01 2006,10:26
Didn't expect my original post to 'take off' like it has - interesting to see how others' experiences of Fluxbox via DSL, compare with my own. Thanks for your thoughts! Posted by doodle77 on June 11 2006,23:36
I prefer JWM to Fluxbox, the reason being that i find that right clicking on the desktop is a dumb way to bring up the main menu. I'm not saying that i particularly like the start menu idea (i like the gnome menus at the top too).

I use jwm myself. not so much for style but for speed. I noticed on my crappy laptop that it loaded much faster and took up a bit less memory. I never really notice on my desktop but I know its there.

Personally, that is my reaction to the "Start" button idea inherited from Win95, etc. - why should I have to move my mouse pointer to the corner of the screen, just to access a menu item? At least with the "right mouse button anywhere" option, I can bring up the menu where I want it, not where the MS 'model' says I should. Still, it's down to personal taste. I wouldn't say that the MS Windows interface model is "wrong"; just that I prefer another way of doing things when I have the choice. And at least Linux gives you that choice... FluxBox was the first windowing system I ever used with linux. And still is. My first experience was with Gentoo linux and I chosed Fluxbox for its wm because it's lightness and features. |
