Hi all, posted this below in Laptops, not sure if it works better here...

I'm trying to force my Toshiba 4010cdt to boot into fb800x600. The video card supports 1024x768 but the LCD panel doesn't.

__

Okay, I've been thrashing around at this for a couple more hours. I thought the fb800x600 lines in syslinux.cfg are the cheat codes invoked when fb800x600 is typed in at the boot prompt. So I copied these lines and pasted them into the default section. However it still only boots at 1024x768. If I type fb800x600 it boots at 800x600.

Am I wrong in assuming the fb800x600 lines are executed when fb800x600 is entered at the boot command?

Help?

Thanks.

I replied in the laptops thread.

I assume you are having this problem with X.
Your settings are loaded later. You should try to edit your X's settings...
Or if your screen goes crazy in CLI there might be a solution to add some lines to /opt/bootlocal.sh.

have you tried just adding it to the boot line in /boot/grub/menu.lst?

If you don't run DSL from CD take kerry's advice.

Thanks everyone, but since I'm running DSL off USB and booting with a floppy, can I edit menu.lst? When I try, even using sudo su, I get a message about "read only file system".

I was concentrating on syslinux.cfg, just wondering now if I need to change the Grub menu.lst file to boot automatically into fb800x600, now I'm just wrestling with trying to edit menu.lst on the USB key. Or is it on my boot floppy?

Yeah!

I finally figured it out. It was an issue with syslinux.cfg, but the one on the boot floppy.

Since the floppy was my boot device, I needed to change parameters within syslinux.cfg on the boot floppy.

I cheated by booting a knoppix livecd and editing the boot floppy in another machine!

Works great!

Now I have to read some more to figure out how to convert feh and unclutter to dsl packages!

Thanks again.
