Shortly after installing DSL to my HD, i removed several icons from the desktop that i thought i wouldn't need.  Later, i decided to Re-Add an icon that i originally erased.  I was able to do it successfully with the icon tool, but the changes i make are erased once i logout.  How do i make the icon changes permanant?

DSL is exactly what i was looking for to breathe life into an 8yr old laptop that was given to me.  2mo ago, i didn't know anything about linux at all.  Now i don't think i ever want to use a MS operating system again.  there sure is a lot to learn though.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Copy the icon and link to ~/.xtdesktop/

The icon and the link are in the .xtdesktop allready, i had just disabled them withe the "remove icons" tab on the icon tool.   path=apps>desktop>icontool

i just cant re-enable them permanantly.

You can always start fresh by copying /etc/skel/.xtdesktop
This is what happens you you first start using DSL.

Or you can go in the .xtdesktop directory and look at the files. I believe I just renamed them by adding a .hide extension.

ok.  I was able to view the .xtdesktop in the terminal but being as new to linux as i am, i am unable to figure out how to edit the info i see.  Does anyone know where i can find a list of all the commands in bash?  All of the "how tos" i have found seem to be beyond me.

This will copy the contents of /etc/skel/.xtdesktop to your home .xtdesktop directory, overwriting whatever is there:
cp  -f  /etc/skel/.xtdesktop/*  $HOME/.xtdesktop/

The address listed at the bottom of my post is a very good starting point for learning all things linux (tldp.org is a good place for other more specific help as well).  The command reference can be found at < http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/linux/cmd/ > and more info at < http://www.linuxcommand.org/ > although i don't think there exists a repository of ALL commands.

Your only wasting space, if your not serous about learning.

It pays to learn the command line in any OS, because that is where the real power and spend is.

As for forums, it's a real nice feeling to join in and be part of a community espeically in Linux, I'm a member of at least 14 or 15 boards.

As for Linux that name really only applies to the kernel, the rest of the OS are GNU software bundled together to make a very impersive OS.

To be absolutly correct DSL is more correctly called DSL GNU/Linux at least that's what debian does, Debian GNU/Linux.
