Is there a way to cut and paste from one application on the desktop to another? I have tried this between sylpheed and MozillaFirebird, as well as from Dillo and Ted, all to no avail. TIA.

Generally if you highlight your text with the mouse and then hit the middle button where you want to paste it, the copy and past just works. (If you don't have a middle button, push down on the scrolly-wheel.  If you don't have a scrolly-wheel, push both the left and right buttons at once.  When you get use to it, c&p is faster/easier in Linux than windows.

I believe it works this way:

Select/highlight text (with mouse) in your preferred application.
Go to your second application.
Press the middle mouse button to paste the text into the second application.

If you only have a two-button mouse, the operating system has probably set it up to "emulate 3-button mouse".  So, when using a two-button mouse, press the two mouse buttons (left and right) together at the same time to paste text.

This still may not work correctly between every application (I think a few may bypass the mouse).  You may have to use a menu to select Copy and/or Paste.

Thanks guys. That did it. I guess I shouldn't have skipped those first few chapters of the linux manual.

Also, if you want to be able to cut-n-paste to and from VNC sessions you might want to run autocutsel...

If I run this on my DSL box and VNC to it from my Windows desktop I can cut-n-paste both ways.

I can even cut-n-paste between 2 VNC sessions... nice! :-)
