Is there any way to adjust screen resolution to 1024x600?

Thats is the screen size for my Toshiba Portege 320CT laptop.

I am new at Linux, so please have mercy...  :O

Yes, but 1024x600 is not a standard option, and so not on the menu. You'll probably need to hdinstall DSL to get that resolution.

I am having a similar issue. I HD installed DSL on my old HP OmniBook 2100. I am able to use everything properly except the resolution DSL defaults to is greater than my screen size and I end up missing the left and bottom parts of my screen. If I switch to an external CRT everything looks great. Any ideas? New to using GUI in unix systems.

You'll need to edit the config files for the X server your using to set the exact resolution you need, but I'm not sure exactly how you would do it, sorry.

I'm using the default X with Frame Buffers, Xvesa didn't seem to want to work with my laptop. I have done some digging around and can't seem to find the right dir for this. Any ideas?

Try hitting CTL-ALT-BACKSPACE to get back to the console.

Then try typing:

Xfbdev --help

I think that there is a way to change the screen size using a command switch like:

Xfbdev -screen=1024x600x16

where -screen=WIDTHxLENGTHxPIXELDEPTHxFREQUENCY or something like that.

If you find a setting that works for you, CTL-ALT-BACKSPACE out again and then edit the xsetup file in your home directory.  Finally, type 'startx' to relaunch XWindows and Fluxbox with your new settings.

Good Luck

I tried your suggestion, after much hunting for the proper specs for my laptop, and am still having the same issue. It doesn't appear to be checking that file on start. Also this may help, the screen res is set high after Lilo runs. I checked several areas and edited a few files, xsetup in home dir as well as xsetup in /etc/X11. I'm really enjoying DSL and will keep using it regardless of res but would like to be able to view the entire work area on my laptop display. Thanks for the help so far.

Try temporarily changing your lilo boot commandline VGA setion so that it now reads "VGA=normal"

It might help. You never know.
